Black Swallowtail Butterfly

July 2, 2014

A lovely black swallowtail butterfly showed up in my garden this morning.  He, unlike the yellow one, would not hold still for any length of time.  It was difficult to get the few shots of him, that I managed.

Interesting though, someone on pinterest suggested cutting oranges in half and putting in a saucer outside.  It was supposed to lure the butterflies.  Frankly, that did not happen in my garden, to my knowledge.

I saw a few bugs, a couple of wasps, but no butterflies partaking of the sweet juice.

Instead, all of the butterflies in my garden, as well as the bumblebees, flock to a veritable wall of lavender liatris at the edge of one of my gardens.  From there, they fly to the mounds of daylilies right in front of the liatris.

The butterfly bush on the other side of the garden is also a beacon to butterflies, and it is just now beginning to bloom.

Probably will not be putting more oranges outside in a dish.  Perhaps you will try this and draw your own conclusions.  If you have success, please leave a comment and enlighten me.
