Wedding Baskets - How To Easily Decorate Them

Wedding baskets, don’t most weddings need a few?   After decorating the birdcage cardholder, we decided the baskets needed a little decor, too.

Emily looked all over for a basket to display the S’more favors and finally found this great basket.  You will note that she chose a basket almost the same color as the birdcage.  She also picked up some more floral stems that match the decor on the birdcage.

This greenery is so pretty!  It is easy to create a beautiful effect.  We decided to attach the stems close to the top of the basket on the front side.

Wedding Baskets How-To

Since we had two pieces of greenery, we attached one facing to the left and one to the right.  It created a nice arch centered on the basket.

You can see in the picture that the stems were just wired on with florist wire in a few strategic places.  Keep the florist wire off of the top of the uppermost basket reed.  Attach the flowers right below it.  The wire is not as visible.  (We are an Amazon affiliate and may receive a small percentage of any sales through this link at no cost to you.  Thanks for supporting this website!)

This greenery had 4 branches and as they were being wired, I realized cutting one from each stem would give me enough to decorate the basket for the Koozies, too.  So, I did.

You need to fan the greenery out some and manipulate it.  The great thing about these wired stems is that you can manipulate them!  If one doesn’t cooperate, use the floral wire strategically so it does what you want.

Then, add the secondary flower stems.  Wedding Baskets - How To Easily Decorate Them

You can see in the picture how to do this.  Pull the wire to the front, underneath the stems, wrap over the stems, and then thread back through the reeds of the basket.  Repeat until the stems are secure and then, twist the wire to secure it.  Cut the wires on the backside and bend the ends back toward the reeds of the basket.  You don’t want to scrape your hands on wire ends.

Add the main flower in the same way.

Although it may not look like it, this basket is 16″ x 20″ and it’s 14″ deep.  That is a nice big basket!  We are making 150 wedding favors.  I’m figuring we will probably be able to stack 50 on each of  3 layers.  If we place them on the bottom of this basket, they will be too low.  That would not look very impressive either.  Wedding baskets should look like they are overflowing, right?  At least the top layer should be visible and protrude a little.

Styrofoam To The Rescue?

I had another brainstorming session and considered a multitude of things.  Then, I remembered some sheets of Styrofoam saved for something that might come along someday!  The Styrofoam was packing for some shelves ordered some time ago. Wedding Baskets - How To Easily Decorate Them

So, I cut the Styrofoam to fit neatly in the bottom of the basket and wrapped it in a couple of sheets of tissue paper.  The tissue paper was simply secured with Scotch tape on the bottom side.

Remember I was decorating two baskets?  This is a picture of the smaller basket for the Koozies and two sheets of the Styrofoam were sufficient to accomplish the objective.  The ‘Koozies’ are clearly visible over the top edge of the smaller of the wedding baskets.

On the other hand, the bigger basket requires a total of six sheets of the Styrofoam.  At least, this is what I think at this point.  These were wrapped in the tissue paper two at a time.  Since the bottom of the basket is smaller and the basket angles out, the sheets of Styrofoam needed cut a little bigger for the last two.

Oh, my gosh!  Aren’t these wedding baskets pretty?  The wedding is only a couple of months away now.  So much to do!
