Since 1981, on the third Sunday of every month from April to October, the Burlington Antique Show is held. This show is only for antiques and vintage collectibles.  Over 200 dealers from across the country display their wares.  It’s a great place to shop in a picturesque outdoor setting at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Burlington, Kentucky.  There are two more shows this year.  You can find the upcoming show dates, times, and information here ►the Burlington Antique Show.

We have been visiting this event every year for some time.  Last Sunday, Dave and I headed over to the show again.  It was $4.00 each to get into the event.  Early birds have to pay $6.00  apiece from 6-8 A.M.

Vintage Spoon Bracelet

A few booths into the show, I found a tray of vintage spoon bracelets.  These are so cute and the clasps are magnetic.  I needed one.  The problem was settling on the one I needed.  Eventually, this beautiful bracelet was chosen and it fits perfectly on my wrist!

How about the ear corn dishes?  Never having seen these corn dishes before, they caught my eye.  Interestingly enough, Amazon has some of these, too.

The Book Booth

We leisurely made our way through different booths and a lot of things caught my eye.

Uppermost in my mind was making my way to the 4-H barn where a lot of books are always on display.  Over the years, I’ve purchased several books at this booth at the Burlington Antique Show.

Once there, I began to look through boxes of children’s books lined up on tables.  A Dr. Seuss book, ‘The Cat In The Hat,’ that I had promised to find for Memphis was soon tucked under my arm.  I love reading Dr. Seuss books to the kids.  We have kept most of ours for when the little grandkids sleepover.

James Whitcomb Riley Books

As I was looking through some old books, scanning them for books by James Whitcomb Riley, out of the corner of my eye, I saw a gentleman approach the vendor with a couple of bags of books.  The gentleman said something about James Whitcomb Riley books.  He had my attention!

I turned around abruptly and told him I love James Whitcomb Riley and one of his books was my prime objective on this day!  He shared some information about Riley and the home where he grew up in Greenfield, Indiana.  We all three had a

pleasant conversation and Gary Overmann, who owns ‘Books of the Ages’, pulled the Riley books out of the bag for me to look over.  He said he usually doesn’t put books out until he takes them home and goes through them.  Two more Riley books made it into my collection that day.

Gary also has booths 163, 176, and 342 at the Ohio Valley Antique Mall at 7285 Dixie Highway in Fairfield, Ohio This is huge and is on my list of places to visit in the Greater Cincinnati area.

About Riley’s Books

If you’ve never read any of Riley’s poems or stories, you should.  His works are usually written in a Hoosier dialect.  I like to think I’m pretty good at reading these out loud and feel comfortable with the dialect after years of sharing the stories with my children and grandchildren.  In fact, I can recite some from memory.

Little Orphant Annie“, “The Raggedy Man“, and “The Bear Story” are my very favorites.

These coin banks caught my eye.  I’ve never seen coin banks like these before.  Isn’t the little turquoise one adorable?  The label reads Mutual of Baltimore.  The sentiment is, “Save and Insure the easiest way!  Save a few coins each day!”

Food and Drinks

There are food and drink trucks throughout the grounds.  I love the look of this mobile bar.  May Bell’s Mobile Bar serves ‘mocktail beverages‘ such as Watermelon Mojito, Thyme after Thyme, Cucumber Breeze, and Strawberry Basil Breeze as well as Sweet Tea.

You Can Expect Some Bargains!

We saw architectural salvage, antiques, old books, furniture, antique tools, dishes, and items too numerous to list.  There are definitely bargains to be had.

Box of Santas

Looking for a vintage Christmas ornament, or at least inspiration for one I’m planning to create, I scanned the tables and shelves.  Near the end of our time at the show, I spotted a plastic container of Santas.  You know we have been collecting Santas for years.

Prepared to buy one, I looked for a price, then, noticed the little sign in the container.  It read, “$5.- for all (the whole boxful).”

In disbelief, I asked the elderly man and he confirmed the price.  Needless to say, the Santas came home with me.  He put the lid on the box and let me have the box, too!  There were still price tags on some of the ornaments.  I added those up and the sum is $108.  What a deal!

If you are in the area and love browsing through antique shows, you need to check out the upcoming Burlington shows on the third Sundays of September and October.
