A Place To Stay
Looking for a place to relax, step back in time, and enjoy a reunion with family and friends? The ‘bed and breakfast’ at Green Gables is just that. My cousins, siblings, and I grew up close to this area. We are now spread all across America. Cousin Margie found this bed and breakfast online. We rented the whole place for a family reunion!
Last weekend, we took the trip to Odon which is close to where I grew up in southwestern Indiana. Our community in Northern Kentucky continues to grow, more industry invades our area, and traffic is just crazy. It was nice to drive back highway 50 to North County Road 900 East.

Amish Today
Turning onto the county road, I was amazed at how the Amish have stepped up their game! Memories of attending Barr Reeve elementary school and riding on the bus through Amish farming communities came back. What a contrast! Of course, that was many years ago!
Along this road, there are many businesses. There’s a sawmill, a portable storage barn business, a woodworking business, lumber company, bakery, a sports complex, and much more! Yet, the road is not congested with too much traffic like our area back in Kentucky. About four miles down this road on the right, we saw the Green Gables sign.
Green Gables
Graber’s Green Gables Bed and Breakfast is located in Odon in southwest Indiana at 8824 North County Road 900 East. Odon, Indiana is a town in Madison Township, Daviess County. Visiting this Amish community is like stepping back in time.
Quiet is what you notice first. This has to be one of my favorite getaways yet. There are chairs, benches, and swings all around the property. My favorite spot has to be the front porch. Watching the Amish horse and buggies go by and listening to the clip-clop of the horses is beautiful and calming. Imagine the peacefulness of this in comparison to the cacophony of traffic in our ever-expanding suburban areas.
A few cars and trucks drive along the road and I did see a tour bus. Amish kids quietly ride their bikes along the road.
Dave went to the local grocery and mentioned how well-behaved the Amish children were in the store.
Enjoy The Animals
Sitting on the front porch, you can watch the cattle in the pasture across the road.
You can watch the horses, too.
If you rise early, you can hear the neighbor’s rooster crow. I love that sound. It brings back memories of growing up in Glendale and having our own chickens.
The neighbor’s little red hen ventured up close to the back deck.
The Owners of Green Gables
Steve and Naomi Graber own Green Gables. If I recall correctly, they started in the food business almost 30 years ago with a bakery and catering business. About 15 years ago, they opened Green Gables Bed & Breakfast.
Naomi is such a sweet welcoming woman and Steve is just as warm and friendly. The house is over 6000 square feet and we felt right at home. Steve said that family is important to him and he loves to see families get together here. Our family members used all six bedrooms. This was cousin Margie’s idea and it was definitely a good one. Waking up and being able to just sit around and visit without ‘running here and there’ is priceless!
Fortunately, some of our family members still live close by and could easily meet us at the bed and breakfast. It was so good to see them all. Although we checked in and stayed on Friday, our official reunion was on Saturday.
We used the well-stocked kitchen to serve drinks and snacks that we had brought. Concerned that there might not be enough plates, we brought paper plates. It did make clean up easier but Naomi has plenty of dishes! There is another full kitchen on the lower level!
Catered Food
The meal Friday, catered by Naomi and Steve, was delicious! Naomi made some pies Friday. She showed up on Saturday just after noon and began making more pies and preparing the
meal. I had never heard of Apple Cream Pie and, yes, it is delicious! (I’ve found that some of the best recipes are from bed and breakfasts and I’m asking Naomi if she will share some of hers!)
Quietly and with precision, she worked in the kitchen on the main floor. Some of the dishes had been prepared in advance. As serving time drew close, Steve brought the fried chicken in and began placing the food and serving pieces out on the island buffet style. He pitched in as if he had done this before. Lol!
Seriously, these two make such a great team and seem to love what they do.
Margie had requested the main dishes and side dishes, which consisted of baked ham, Amish fried chicken, green beans, ‘macaroni and cheese’, and a tossed salad. The dressing she makes for the salad is delicious. Naomi said it is one of Steve’s mother’s recipes.
For The Sports Fans
If you have sports fans, they will love the
spacious family room with three overstuffed sofas and the huge flat-screen television. What could make that any better? Surround sound. The guys did not miss their football games!
There is another large television with plenty of comfortable seating on the lower level.
For The Kids
Is there anything for the kids? Well, yes, there is. Memphis loved the little kitchen set and spent lots of time whipping up new dishes, like pickle soup. She enjoyed the swing set and a Little Tikes slide outside. Inside, there is a pint-size door in the kitchen. Behind the door are all kinds of toys. Memphis loved opening the little door and venturing in to discover a different toy.
