How to decorate the best fall kitchen window? Start with a couple of iron brackets. If you like shopping at flea markets or antique shops, you have probably seen these brackets. I picked these up at Blue Willow House in Dillsboro, Indiana. In the kitchen area of this little shop, I noticed a rod sitting on two of these brackets and just think it is a very clever idea.
This is a picture of that rod, with lanterns and a birdcage hanging from the rod. When I saw this, I decided that this treatment is perfect for the kitchen window. The lanterns have to be scaled down because I still want to see out the window and don’t want to be bumping my head!
Just imagine all the ideas you can come up with for every season and holiday! Of course, I bought two of the brackets. So, before Thanksgiving is over, here is our fall kitchen window display.

- 2 iron brackets
- 4 screws
- 1 wooden dowel (I used a 1.5-inch wooden dowel)
- Black acrylic craft paint
- 2 lanterns
- battery-operated votive candles
- 2 silk pinecone and berry sprays
- decorative fabric
- scissors or rotary cutter and mat
- Quilting Ruler
- A Fall Sign
Considering the colors I already have in the Fall sign, the berry garland, and seasonal colors, I chose this pretty fabric. With fabric in hand, I also chose these two small picks and the bead garland. The wax votive candles are battery operated. (You won’t want to use real candles with silk sprays like these.)
Install The Brackets and the Wooden Dowel
First, install the brackets. The brackets do not come with screws. You need to find screws that will fit through the holes in the brackets. I attached these brackets to the window trim with wood screws.
The dowel I used is a closet dowel from Lowe’s. I cut it to size with a miter box and saw. Then, decided to paint it black with regular acrylic craft paint. I didn’t seal it and left it with a matte finish. The black dowel isn’t the focus. I don’t want to call attention to it.
To install it, just set it in the two hooks.
Decorate The Lantern
This is simple and easy. I picked up these floral picks at Joann’s. By readjusting the berries and leaves on the stems and curving the lower end of the stem, I create a nice little pocket where the votive can sit. It’s not necessary to cut the stem and we can use it again…
How simple is that?
Cut the Fabric For Hanging
To support the weight of the lanterns, I decided to use fabric. Although twine will work for this, the idea is to have something pretty that is sturdy enough to support the lanterns.
This fabric is 100% cotton and 45 – inches wide. First, fold the fabric in half. You will have a folded piece of fabric about 22.5 – inches wide. Then, fold the fabric in half again. Your folded fabric should be about 11.25 – inches wide. It is easy at this point, to use a rotary cutter and a ruler to cut the fabric into a 3 – inch strip.
Then, open the fabric strip, line up the ends on your cutting mat, and cut the selvage edge away from each end.
Next, to add a little more strength and to look better visually, fold the sides into the middle and iron, creating a 1- inch wide center section.
Notice that I did not finish the edges. This ironed middle section ended up being a little over 1 – inch wide and about 12 – inches in length. I left enough to create a bow with the tails.
Then, tie an overhand knot and slip the loop over the dowel. Pull the knot down to the hanger on the top of the lantern and create a pretty bow using the full 3 – inch width.
After making the bow, trim the ends at an angle. There isn’t a long tail on each of these, so the angle isn’t as sharp as I would like, but it’s enough.
Fall Window Display
The white berry garland is subtle and I love that. Just draping it loosely over and around the black dowel, the garland makes a nice textural element and echoes the off-white color in the sign and the decorations in the lanterns.
The ‘Fall Sweet Fall’ sign didn’t have a hanger on it. I added two small eye screws on the top of the sign, threaded twine through each, and tied them to the dowel for hanging.
The happy harvest sign centered between the two black crows on pumpkins adds some interest and weight to the window display. Although this display is simple, it adds interest and just a bit of fall to our kitchen but there is still a clear view of the backyard and the woods beyond.
Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!
