The idea for this Easter balloon money train gift came from Pinterest, of course. My grandkids all have savings accounts. I’ve encouraged them to save money. (I worked at a local bank for many years.) Instead of buying a gift that they won’t use, I try to find creative ways of making a monetary gift more fun and interesting. When I saw this idea, it seemed the perfect idea for our Easter egg hunt grand prize.
The idea of giving a grand prize to whoever finds a special egg came to mind when I purchased a bag of plastic eggs with candy and stickers inside. You can write a note and place it in one of the eggs or choose one of a special color or decoration.
In the past, we have added coins to the contents of plastic eggs. This idea seems like it will be a lot more exciting for the little ones. We’ll see.
When I saw this idea, it seemed the perfect idea for our Easter egg hunt grand prize. Misty at the Maternal Hobbyist came up with this clever idea. Instead of a birthday party, we have created an Easter party version.
I found the Easter Bunny balloon at our local grocery. It stands roughly 30 inches tall and 22 inches wide. You will want one of the large balloons for this project.
You can find the scalloped containers at The Dollar Tree. They didn’t have any clear ones left, so, I picked up one pink and one blue. The multi-colored tissue paper, the Scotch tape, and the chocolate eggs are also from The Dollar Tree.
Easter Bunny Balloon Money Train Gift
For this project, you’ll need:
- a large helium-filled Easter balloon
- plastic treat bags
- tissue paper
- clear Scotch tape
- 2 plastic scalloped containers 4-1/4 x 3 x 6-inches
- a balloon weight
- roll of 1/2 – inch satin ribbon
- chocolate candy eggs
- dollar bills (no more than 10)
Directions
Preparing the Money
The first thing you need to do is make sure the bills are flat and the corners are not folded. Place one bill in each of the plastic treat bags. Lay the bills in the bags face down. Fold the top of the bags down and tape them shut.
Tape the plastic bags with the bills together, bottom to top. Tape all of the bags with the bills together end to end.
Preparing the Scalloped Containers
Then, empty the chocolate Easter eggs into one of the scalloped containers.
Next, lay two sheets of tissue paper out with the top sheet diagonally over the first. Set the remaining scalloped container in the middle of the tissue. Pull up all four corners of the bottom tissue paper. Then, set the tissue paper-covered container inside the container with the eggs.
Next, you’ll want to place one hand inside the container and gently press downward as you press the tissue paper up against the inside container. You don’t want to press down too quickly or you’ll tear the tissue. Press down gingerly as you push the tissue paper onto the inside container. The inside container should just touch the eggs.
Setting the Balloon In Place
Tape the top bill in a sleeve to the balloon ribbon just under the balloon. I used two pieces of tape, one just under the other for this, leaving the rest of the money bags loose. Then, fold the money in the bags accordion style.
You can tape each of the money bags down the ribbon if you choose.
Place the balloon weight inside the container. Then, hold the ribbon at the base of the balloon as you place the money alongside the weight. Tuck the ribbon loosely into the container.
Finishing Touches on the Balloon Money Train Gift
Lay the satin ribbon on the table. Set the container on the ribbon and pull one end up and over the balloon.
While you hold the balloon on top of the container, drape the other end of the ribbon over the top of the balloon and tie a bow. You can tape the ribbon to the bottom of the container if you wish. I didn’t.
We’ll be using this as decoration and as soon as the egg hunt is over, the winner will simply pull both ends of the ribbon bow and release the balloon money train gift to the squeals and delight of the other kids.
This only takes about a half hour to put together. You have plenty of time before Easter!
