These adorable Alice in Wonderland wooden blocks are easy to make with plain wooden blocks from Dollar Tree. Arrange the blocks in a playful stack or scattered around a bookshelf to bring a touch of magic to any room.
Consider adding quotes or phrases from the book to make the blocks even more whimsical and enchanting. Distress the blocks for a vintage look or add a glossy finish for a modern twist.
I’ve included a link below for an Alice in Wonderland pad of cardstock at Amazon, which I’ve used for this project. (This is the second Alice in Wonderland pad I’ve bought! The first one was used on the exploding box.)
I could have cut the printed cardstock from the pad and used it, but I wanted a thinner paper to glue to the blocks. It’s easy to use regular copy paper to make copies of the cardstock graphics with your printer. You can also adjust the size of the graphics you print.
Some images used for these blocks came from a pin on Pinterest. I just saved it on my laptop, resized it on PicMonkey, and printed it.
Color Ideas for Your Wooden Blocks
While I opted for gold paint on these blocks, choices to consider include red and black, or any color that suits your color scheme.
Red and black can produce a striking and theatrical appearance, whereas gold can introduce a hint of opulence and sophistication.

For This Project, you’ll need:
- Wooden blocks
- Gold acrylic craft paint
- Alice in Wonderland pad of cardstock
- Printed Alice in Wonderland graphics
- Sharp scissors
- paper cutter
- Matte Mod Podge
- 1-inch flat paintbrush
Paint the Wooden Cubes
First, you want to paint the wooden blocks. If the surface is a little rough, use a piece of a regular brown paper bag to sand the block lightly. There is no need for sandpaper, this works!
After painting the blocks and allowing them to dry, I use the same piece of paper bag to sand the painted blocks lightly. After a second coat of paint, lightly sand again. You’ll be surprised at what a difference this step makes!
Print And Prepare the Vintage Graphics
Then, print out the graphics onto regular printer paper. I like spraying RUST-OLEUM Clear Topcoat onto the images to ensure the ink won’t bleed when the Mod Podge is applied.
You will need 6 graphics for each cube. Notice that you need to crop the pictures to a 2-inch square for these blocks. You don’t want to make them 2-1/4 – inches. You’ll have problems with the corners and the gold background makes a nice frame. I used a paper cutter but you can use a straight-edge, cutting mat, X-Acto, or scissors.
Make a Template for Cropping Images
I made a 2-inch template from a piece of cardstock. To do this, simply draw a 2-inch square and use a metal ruler and an X-Acto knife to cut it. Then, just move the template around until you are happy with the image.
A little pencil mark in each corner is all you need to indicate where to cut.
Glue the Vintage Graphics to the Wooden Blocks
Begin by applying Mod Podge to the back of the graphics.
If the paper isn’t sticking to the wood properly, paint Mod Podge onto the flat surface of the block, too.
Once the surface is ready, center the graphic on the cube. Repeat for each side. Be sure to let these completely dry before adding another coat of Mod Podge.
Next, apply a coat of Mod Podge over each of the graphics. Be sure the edges are pressed down against the wood. You can easily work on the other three sides and the top, allow those to dry a while, and then finish the bottom. This matte Mod Podge dries relatively quickly after application.
Just apply Mod Podge with a 1-inch flat paintbrush and don’t overwork it as you use it.
Apply another coat of the Mod Podge over each side. Paint the Mod Podge over all of the sides except one. Then, when the sides are dry, paint the last side. Make sure the glue doesn’t glob on the edges.
