How to Make Patriotic Fabric Ring Flowers in a Oui Jar

Here’s another way to use those adorable little glass Oui jars for a patriotic display!  You’ve seen fabric flowers with a wooden ring for a base.  Typically, these are larger.  These are a mini version of those.  These little fabric ring flowers use a 1-inch white plastic ring for a base.

Directions:

Looking through my fabric scraps, I came across a bunch of 6-inch quilt squares.  I chose some red, white, and blue prints for this project.  You can choose from the leftover fabrics you have.  The quilt squares actually worked perfectly for this project.

First, I trimmed the pinking off the left and right sides of the quilt square.  Then, cut 1/2-inch strips from the square.  This square yielded 13 strips.  It is not necessary to measure this and get overly accurate.  I just eyeballed the cuts.

Next, fold one of the strips in half and insert the fold into the center of the ring.  Wrap the tails up around the ring and through the fabric loop.

Then, pull the tails and tighten the lark’s head knot tight.  Continue adding the remaining strips to the ring.

One of the fabrics I chose is a little limp. It wasn’t holding its shape very well, so I used Aleene’s Stiffen Quik to remedy that.  After tying the fabric strips to the ring, I laid the ring with the strips on a newspaper to protect the counter.  You will want to adjust the strips nicely.  Then, spray the Stiffen Quik about 6 inches away until the fabric strips are wet.  Let the fabric flowers dry for an hour or more.

Center Round

While the fabric flowers dry, cut a 1-1/4 inch round from chipboard for each of the flowers.  If you don’t have a separate piece of chipboard, use the chipboard from the back of a tablet of paper.  It’s the same thing.

I used a compass fitted with a blade for this. You can also draw or trace a circle and use scissors or an X-Acto knife.

Cut 2-inch squares from fabric to cover the rounds you cut.  These are going to be glued to the back of the flowers, and the 1-inch stars will be glued to the front.

Place one of the rounds in the center of a fabric square.  Cut the four outer angles off of the fabric square.  Then, make slits from the outer edge of the square almost to the cardboard round.

Apply glue to a few of the tabs you’ve cut.  Then, lay the tab over the round and press firmly to adhere to the back of the round.  Repeat until you adhere all of the tabs to the round.

Glue the Fabric Covered Round and Star

After the flowers have dried, apply Tacky Glue to the back of a fabric round and adhere to the center back of the fabric flower.

Tie embroidery floss to the button holes—knot in the back.  Then, glue a star button over the ring in the center of the fabric flower front.

Oui Jars

I’ve left these jars clear, but another option is to spray paint them red, white, and blue.

For this project, I used burlap ribbon to wrap around the jars.  You could also use a cut piece of burlap.  Just use Tacky Glue to adhere the burlap to the jars.

These jars are larger at the bottom and slightly smaller at the top.  I had to cut slits and remove a tiny wedge of the burlap in three places along the top edge so that the burlap would lay flat.  Cut the end of the burlap to butt up perfectly to the glued burlap edge.

Cut the foam to fit inside the Oui jar.

Then, glue a wooden letter over the burlap seam.  The letters used in this project measure 2 x 1.5 inches.  They won’t lie flat on the jar.  Just apply glue to the center area that touches the jar.  The Tacky Glue sets up relatively quickly.  Hold it in place for a couple of minutes.  I placed the jar on its side atop the letter as I continued working on another.

Setting The Stem

Then, cut a piece of flower foam to fit inside the jar.  You’ll want to leave room around the foam for paper crinkles.

Fill the area around the sides and top of the foam with paper crinkles to hide the florist foam.

You can use a glue gun or Tacky Glue for this.  Glue the wooden pick to the flower ring on the back of the flower.  First, cut the wooden pick to the length you want.  I cut 4-1/4 inches off each pick.

Then, cut two half-inch strips to tie on each pick for leaves.

Lastly, insert the pointed end of the pick into the center of the foam.  The picture above shows that the flowers look good on the back side.
