Learn how to make an Alice in Wonderland frame with this easy step-by-step DIY tutorial. Perfect for whimsical decor or a Mad Hatter tea party theme!
Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland has always fascinated me. When I saw a few picture frames decorated with Alice in Wonderland characters made from paper clay, I was inspired.

In looking for an Alice in Wonderland mold, I found a tip for using paper clay in silicone molds. When I read it, my first thought was, “Duh. Why have I not thought of this?”
The easy tip is to fill the cavities with paper clay. Then, place the silicone mold in the freezer! I tried it. After 30 minutes in the freezer, the clay slips right out of the mold super easily. If you’ve ever tried to remove clay from a very detailed mold, only to have it crack as you carefully bend the silicone back, you will totally appreciate this tip.

In a few minutes, the clay thaws and is pliable. Even the detailed ferns come out easily!
The frames used in this whimsical Alice in Wonderland room decor DIY project are from Dollar Tree.
Alice in Wonderland Frame
Supplies:
- Photo frame
- Paper clay
- Alice in Wonderland cardstock
- Alice in Wonderland silicone mold
- Sharp Scissors
- Tacky Glue or Hot Glue
- Tim Holtz Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Spray
- Acrylic craft paint
Directions:
Paper Clay Pieces
First, make the paper clay pieces using the silicone mold. After filling the molds with paper clay, place the mold in the freezer. Allow it to freeze for 30 minutes. Then, remove the mold from the freezer and take out each paper-clay piece.
Allow the pieces to dry before painting. Drying time can vary depending on the thickness of the piece.
Paint the Clay Pieces
After the pieces have dried, paint them with acrylic craft paint. I used Craft Smart ultra-bright gold metallic, DecoArt light avocado, pine green, titanium white, FolkArt skyline blue, Ceramcoat flesh, and DecoArt alizarin crimson.
To achieve the pink on the teapot, I added a little of the titanium white to alizarin crimson. Alice’s cheek, and lips are painted with a touch of DecoArt Wild Berry. For Alice’s hair, I used Ceramcoat Antique Gold.
I sprayed a little of the Distress Oxide onto a paint palette. Then, used a stiff dry paintbrush to lightly brush over the painted pieces to create a slightly distressed look.
The Background Frame
For this project, I picked up two white 4″ x 6″ frames at Dollar Tree. After removing the back, I laid the frame with the glass on top of a page of the Alice in Wonderland cardstock.
Once I had a pleasing composition, I removed the frame and traced around the glass. Next, cut the graphic to size and replace the back of the frame.
Adhere the painted tea set to the lower corner with Tacky Glue. Then, glue the longest fern and cards to the left side and bottom of the frame. The cards are cut from the Alice in Wonderland cardstock pad.
Next, layer the white rabbit on top of the fern and cards. Add a fern leaf above the tea set. The toadstools are from a pack of Tim Holtz ephemera that were leftovers from other projects. The metal keys are from Hobby Lobby’s Fairy Tale jewelry line.
The “take some more tea” is a cutout from the cardstock pad, too. It can be layered over another label cut from the same pad.

I created another picture frame featuring the Mad Hatter using the same simple process.
