What’s better than a beautiful barn wedding? After this past weekend, I just can’t imagine a better wedding venue. Just a little over three hours from here in South Central Kentucky is an old tobacco barn. You have to travel down narrow roads back through rolling hills to reach this spot away from the noise and chaos of cities and towns.
When Jon-Michael and Emily first announced that they wanted to have their wedding three and a half hours away in a barn, I have to admit, I wondered why. Almost two years ago, we took a trip down to The Barn At Cedar Grove to meet with the owner, Amy Mitchum. Stepping out of the car, I understood why they were sure this was their perfect place.

As we neared the barn this last weekend, the sign showing the way had another message printed on it, “Wedding Today“.
We passed another sign pointing the way with Emily’s & Jon-Michael’s name on it. Then, this chalkboard sign was at the entrance to the drive down to the barn. Amy thinks of every little detail.
About The Barn Wedding Venue
The barn is back a long lane. You’ll pass a field on the right where a sign signals that this is the parking area. To ensure that there are no cars and trucks in the wedding pictures, the grassy field is for parking and a couple of golf carts are available to transport wedding guests to and from the barn!
Hunting Lodge
You’ll also pass a little path off to the right that leads to the hunting lodge. What barn wedding is complete without a hunting lodge for the men of the wedding party?
There, the groom and the groomsmen can hang out, have lunch, and get dressed for the wedding. Tiffany, my daughter, and I took Aidan up to the lodge and showed him around before the other guys arrived. He sat down in the rocking chair on the back deck, looked out through the woods into the field beyond and said, “This is my dream home.”
There is a peacefulness in this place, which cannot be denied. You don’t have to worry about the noise from interstate traffic or trains going by during the ceremony.
Tobacco Barn
Down the hill, the old tobacco barn comes into view. On either side, long white curtains flank the door opening.
Stepping into the barn, it is breathtaking before decorations even begin! There are smooth concrete floors throughout the barn, the kitchen, and two sizeable bathrooms.
Amy had sturdy wooden tables made. For the reception, we chose not to cover them with a tablecloth because they are so pretty.
In addition to these, there are several old tables to choose from for showcasing the wedding cake, baskets of koozies, the guest registry, and other goodies you might offer. The back of the barn is just as pretty as the front! Another huge wreath sits above the entrance on the back.
Bridal Cottage
On the backside, large doors open onto a patio and an expansive meadow. Look ahead to your right and nestled in the edge of the woods is a quaint little cottage. This is for the bride and her attendants to use while dressing and preparing for the day of the wedding.
How adorable is this? It’s perfectly feminine ‘shabby chic’!
Additional Touches
There are also two little buildings near the bridal cottage which store chandeliers, lanterns, candelabras, and a vast array of decorative items. You can choose from these to add to your decor, supply your own, or use a combination of both.
The Ceremony Spots
To the left is a wooded area. An arch made of grapevine beckons you onto a large path into the woods. The arch has been beefed up quite a bit since this picture. It was taken earlier last spring. Wait till you see how gorgeous this looks with fabric added to it!
A short walk down the path reveals an opening perfect for a wedding ceremony. This is where Emily and Jon-Michael chose to have their ceremony. They could have had it in the barn if it had rained. The meadow is another of many options.
Seating options for the wedding range from old mismatched chairs, plush chairs, pews, and benches. Emily decided upon the mismatched chairs. She also chose a wooden log arch for a backdrop.
The venue is beautiful even before any added decor. These pictures are all before any personal touches! Can you imagine your special touches?
