Needing some tiny cookies for the fairy party, I tweaked my family’s favorite vanilla bean sugar cookie recipe. ◄Click here for the original recipe. You can find the fairy party centerpiece ◄here.
The recipe for the frosting is made with shortening and butter. The combination creates a frosting that has a slightly harder crust than regular buttercream using only butter in the recipe. To avoid a mess, this works better for cookies that might have to be stacked. You will find that this recipe is perfect for cookies.
You will see that I am not a skilled cake decorator but I do enjoy adding decorations to some baked goods. The little girls won’t notice! Don’t be too critical. Lol!
This Wilton Mini Romantic Metal Cookie Cutter Set seemed perfect for the mini cookies. I used the heart and the flower cutters from this set. The cutters are about 1″ across, a perfect bite-size for little fairies. (We are an Amazon affiliate and may receive a small percentage of any sales through this link at no cost to you. Almond Sugar Cookies
- 3/4 cup butter softened
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 1/2 tsp almond extract
- 2 – 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
**Almond frosting (Recipe below)
Beat room temperature butter in a large mixing bowl at medium speed of an electric mixer until creamy.
Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add egg and almond extract, mixing well.
Combine flour and salt; gradually add to butter mixture, beating until smooth. Shape dough into two discs. Wrap each in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
Roll each disc to 1/4″ thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap or on a lightly
floured surface. Cut with cookie cutters Place on lightly greased cookie sheets.
Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until edges are just beginning to brown. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove cookies to a wire rack and cool.
**Almond frosting
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/4 cup Shortening
- 1/2 tsp. almond extract
- 1/4 tsp. vanilla
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1-1/2 Tblsp. milk
Cream the butter and shortening together in a medium-sized bowl.
Mix in the almond and vanilla flavorings. Add the powdered sugar along with the milk and beat well.
Divide the frosting into smaller bowls and add food coloring. I divided the frosting in half, left the original white, and added one drop of Wilton Gel Pastel Food Coloring to the other half. This set has yellow, pink, blue, and green. I love the pastel pink color achieved with this set. Piping
To make the hearts on the top of the heart-shaped cookies, use a Wilton tip #32. You can use other tips that you have but to get this look, use the #32. to make the little florets on top of the flower-shaped cookies, use the same #32 tip.
Originally, I had planned to use a Russian cake decorating tip but ended up using smaller Wilton tips. I bought the Russian decorating tips months ago and ordered only the tips. Be aware that you will need the coupler that fits these tips if you buy them, something I did not realize then! They are larger than the Wilton large couplers. These are a perfect size for a little fairy tea party! Aren’t they so stinking cute? The girls are going to love them.
