Create 4 Different Filled Cupcakes From One Batch
Want to create some filled cupcakes that will steal attention? Why not fill them with different flavors? Wanting to fix her mother a surprise for her birthday, Sophie and I decided to make some plain white cupcakes and fill them with four different kinds of fillings. We went back and forth for a little bit with different filling ideas. Having the ingredients on hand limits our creativity but you can change these up to use the ingredients you have on hand.
We decided to make a variety using Heath Milk Chocolate Chips and Toffee Bits, turtles, sprinkles, and Mini Oreos as inspiration. So, we only made 24 white cupcakes but filled them with four different fillings and decorated the tops, accordingly. Inside is a little surprise of more of what is on top.

Instructions For Filled Cupcakes
The first thing to do is to make a batch of regular-sized cupcakes. We made 24 white cupcakes but you can also make chocolate or yellow cake. Use your favorite cupcake recipe or cake mix.
Allow the cupcakes to cool. We made 6 of each different flavor. In retrospect, I wish we had used four different colors of cupcake liners. It would be a lot easier to keep them straight and remember which filling is in which cupcake after the tops have been frosted! (We filled the cupcakes and then, frosted all of them at one time. As we worked on them, we had a couple of panic moments of, “Which filling is in this one?”)
Use a large decorator tip to make a well in the top of each cupcake. Use a straw or a wooden spoon handle to push the cake plug out of the tip and save on a plate for later. The straw fit in the round opening of the tip we used. Save the plug, we use it to place on top of the filling to seal the top.
You Will Need:
For these cupcakes, make half of the recipe for Perfect Buttercream or use your favorite frosting.
You’ll need “stabilized whipped cream” for two-thirds of the cupcakes. Regular whipped cream will break down unless you are serving these immediately. Don’t take the chance. Make the stabilized whipped cream with the recipe below.

Stabilized Whipped Cream Chill a medium-sized mixing bowl and mixer beaters in the freezer for 20 minutes or so. Pour 1 cup of the heavy whipping cream into the bowl. Add the 2-1/2 tablespoons of the powdered sugar and beat until thickened. Mix in the 1-1/2 tablespoons of the Meringue Powder and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Whip until stiff peaks form.
#1 Heath Bar Filled Cupcakes
You’ll need:
- Heath Milk Chocolate Chips and Toffee Bits
- Stabilized Whipped Cream
- Perfect Buttercream Frosting
- 1/2 cup of Chocolate chips melted with 1 teaspoon of shortening poured into one corner of a Ziploc freezer bag (This makes plenty for the Turtle Cupcakes and the Heath Bar Cupcakes.)
How To:
For the Heath Bar cupcake, pipe stabilized whipped cream into the wells of each of six cupcakes. Next, sprinkle Heath Milk Chocolate Chips and Toffee Bits on top of the whipped cream. Then, place the plug on top of the whipped cream and chips. Press gently into place.
Frost the top of the filled cupcake. Keep the frosting flat. Snip a tiny bit of the corner of the Ziploc bag filled with the melted chocolate.
Pipe a swirl on top of the frosting with the melted chocolate.
Next, pipe the stabilized cream on top of the swirl and sprinkle Heath Milk Chocolate Chips and Toffee Bits on top.
#2 Turtle Filled Cupcakes
You’ll need:
- Toasted Pecan Halves – reserve the best ones for topping each of the cupcakes. Chop the rest.
- Salted Caramel Topping
- Stabilized Whipped Cream
- Perfect Buttercream Frosting
- 1/2 cup of Chocolate chips melted with 1 teaspoon of shortening poured into one corner of a Ziploc freezer bag (This makes plenty for the Turtle Cupcakes and the Heath Bar Cupcakes.)

- Bag of Kraft Caramels
How To:
For the Turtle Filled cupcake, spoon caramel topping into the well in the top of six cupcakes.
Top the caramel with chopped pecans.
Replace the cake plug.
Frost the top of the filled cupcake. Keep the frosting flat.
Drizzle melted chocolate on top of the frosting.
Next, pipe the stabilized whipped cream over the drizzled chocolate.
Add one of the toasted pecans. Cut one of the caramels into thirds and add one of these pieces next to the pecan. (A whole piece of caramel would look too clunky and would be a little difficult to eat along with a bite of the cupcake.)
#3 Sprinkles Filled Cupcakes
You’ll Need:
- Perfect Buttercream Frosting
- Sprinkles of your choice
- Stabilized Whipped Cream
How To:
For the Sprinkles Cupcake, pipe buttercream frosting into the well of six cupcakes.
Next, add Sprinkles.
Replace the cake plug.
We used green sprinkles inside, which matched the green cupcake liners.
Frost the top of the filled cupcake. Keep the frosting flat.
Top with stabilized whipped cream.
Add sprinkles of your choice.
#4 Oreo Filled Cupcakes
You’ll need:
- Mini Oreo Cookies
- Perfect Buttercream Frosting
- Stabilized Whipped Cream
For the Oreo cupcake, pipe stabilized whipped cream into the wells of each of six cupcakes.
Process a few of the Mini Oreo Cookies. Spoon some of the cookie crumbs over top of the whipped cream.
Replace the cake plug.
Frost the top of the filled cupcake. Keep the frosting flat.
Pipe whipped cream on top and garnish with a Mini Oreo Cookie!
There! From plain white cupcakes, we’ve created four different flavors. Sophie and I are planning to make some more with fruit fillings and toppings. Imagine all the variations you can make. Why did I never think of this before?

Those all look so yummy! My middle son was really into filling cupcakes last year and we learned a lot about what types of fillings work well (and which ones don’t!). Pinned.
Thanks for pinning! Did you do a post on which worked best?
Oh my yumminess!
