Scarlett O’Hara Halloween Costume Plan
Scarlett O’Hara Halloween Costume? Memphis watched ‘Gone With the Wind’ a few weeks ago and decided she wanted to be Scarlett O’Hara for Halloween. Well, I love that movie classic and am tickled she chose to be Scarlett! With her long dark hair, which falls in ringlets, it is just the perfect costume for her.
On my trips to the fabric stores lately, I searched for fabric, which would come close to the fabric for Scarlett’s green and white picnic dress. (This was Mem’s choice of dresses.)
Nothing. I thought perhaps in the curtain and drapery fabric, no nothing there either.

After an extensive search on the internet, I realize finding a fabric close to the original is futile. Brainstorm. Maybe, I could print my own fabric? Then, I happened across these Derwent Inktense colored pencils on Amazon. These aren’t just any colored pencils.
These Inktense Colored Pencils can be used on fabric, preferably natural fibers, especially silk and cotton. You can use these on paper, too.
The pencils are water-soluble and when the color dries, it is permanent! Perfect! With just a little water on a paintbrush, the vibrant colors can be softened. Yes, you can create your own unique design on fabric!

Even if you are not up for making something like this Scarlett O’Hara Halloween costume, imagine all the other things you could create using these pencils! As I was drawing with them, my mind wandered and I remembered a couple of small pillows I would like to cover.
Wouldn’t it be neat to use these pencils to decorate the fronts? How about a canvas bag? The kids would probably love to decorate their own T-shirts! I love these!

Along with the Derwent pencils, you will need a pattern.
It doesn’t have to be exactly like Scarlett’s dress. This little Simplicity pattern #8953 seemed close enough. With a couple of alterations, it will be perfect.
You will need 100% cotton fabric. I found the white cotton fabric at Joann’s. ►Shop the largest selection of high-quality fabric in unique prints, colors, and materials at JOANN!
I also bought the same amount of sheer organza fabric to layer over the top of the cotton. The organza will soften the look of the pencil design.
Some dark pine green velour fabric is going to be made into the sash.
Choosing The Pattern Design
Finding a pattern similar to the one on Scarlett’s dress was not really difficult. It reminded me of an embroidery quilt pattern. I have a book of quilt patterns and have misplaced it. Looking for the book for days, I finally gave up and searched on the internet. The pattern I found gives a soft wispy feel of Scarlett’s original. You can find it here►embroiderypattern.
In order to get a feel for the pencils, take a scrap piece of fabric and try out different pressures, working with water, and how to create different effects using it.
Drawing The Pattern On The Fabric
The first step is pinning and cutting the pattern pieces out of the white cotton fabric as indicated in your pattern. Then, I started with the back pieces of the bodice.
If you have a light table, it will make this much easier. You can hold it to a window and trace it. If the fabric is thin enough, you can see through it and this fabric is perfect for this. If necessary, you can go over the pattern with a black pen or flair first.
Notice that I ironed along the seam line. Since you are drawing this on, why not perfectly match where the sides intersect.
I also bought some sheer organza fabric to layer over the top of the cotton fabric. Just laying the sheer organza over the bodice pieces, you can see how it softens the pencil design.
So, this is also the pattern I’ve added to the bodice front and the skirt is next. Yes, this is a little bit ambitious but the end result should be charming! This is only part one. Check back for more!

Wow! I am amazed by how vivid the pencils are on the bodice! And your drawing is so pretty. I can’t wait for the next installment!
You are right, Michelle. The pencil colors are so vivid, I actually try to use a soft touch with them so they won’t be too striking. Although this might have been a little over the top, I’m thinking of other projects for these, too!
