Inspiration For the Christmas Game
In order to include everybody in our family Christmas Eve party, I started looking online for activities that include the entire family. You know how it is, the guys head to the big screen and watch a ball game. The girls gather around the kitchen to talk, and the kids run through the house with reckless abandon from one thing to another.
A few years ago, I decided that the dessert contest is pretty successful, so another group activity seems a good idea. I found a post for “The Christmas Game” on Pinterest. This inspired our version of the game. We made a few changes to the original version.
We display the gifts for this game on the coffee table in the family room, keeping them separate from the other Christmas gifts. It makes a nice Christmas display, too.
The Christmas Game
First, collect inexpensive presents for everyone who will be at the Christmas party and wrap them. Most of the gifts I purchased were $10.00 or under. Cash or gift cards can be hidden in some of the gifts. One of the gifts will have a more significant amount of cash to make it interesting. I only wrap one gift for each person each year.
Make Slips of Paper with Numbers on Them
Print or just write numbers on paper, making one for each person expected. (You can use your dessert contest theme on the number slips to keep everything cohesive.) We expect eighteen people here, so we print eighteen numbers on a piece of paper. Cut out the numbers, fold them in half or into quarters, and they are ready to be drawn from a wooden sleigh we have. You can use a box or a hat instead of a sleigh.
Wrapping and Displaying the Gifts for The Christmas Game
Remember that you want to keep these gifts separate from the gifts under the tree. Beneath these gifts is a table! Note that these gifts are also wrapped in different paper than the gifts under the tree. The last thing you want to do is mix up the gifts!
You can see that the tags are placed on the gifts upside down, in envelopes, or some are enclosed in the gifts right on top of the tissue paper covering the gift.
Playing The Christmas Game
First, the person with number one chooses a gift and opens it. Number two goes next. That person can choose another gift from the pile or steal an opened gift from someone else. The person with the stolen gift can either choose another gift from the pile or steal from someone else. A gift can only be stolen two times and can’t be stolen again.
The game resumes and the next number is in play. (Most of us have probably played a similar game with co-workers, but everyone brought a gift.)
The Spin on The Christmas Game That Will Make Your Family Laugh
I think the Christmas game is a great idea, but I take it a little further and choose some cheesy sayings to accompany the gifts. Everyone has to read the tags that are included with the gift. You know some of the puns will get laughs and perhaps some will receive winces, but it will be so much fun. Yes, I probably enjoy making these tags up and seeing the reactions more than anyone receiving them does.
Cheesy Gift and Tag Ideas
Chocolates and Money
I try to come up with a cheesy saying or a play on words as I shop for gifts. This box of chocolates was a Mother’s Day gift. I saved the box and the little brown cup wrappers and filled them with coins and bills. Chocolate-filled gold coins sat on top of the box. These are inside a Christmas box that looks like a book. The tag reads: What’s better, a box of chocolates or money? Looks can be deceiving…
The inquisitive will look beyond the top layer.
Gloves and Socks
A coordinating pair of gloves and socks are nestled in layers of tissue paper with a tag that says, Wishing You Warm and Cozy Finger and Toes all winter long!
Oven Mitt, Potholder, and Spatula
(We are an Amazon affiliate and may receive a small percentage of any sales through any links on this page at no cost to you. Thanks for supporting this website.)
This gift includes an oven mitt, a silicone potholder, and a spatula and brush set.
The tag reads, Ad-Mitt it! You deserve this! You’ve been good all year… Well, most of the time, Some of the time… Once in a while. Never mind. Even the naughty deserve something nice!
Gift Soaps
A box of gift soaps wrapped in festive Christmas paper is another gift. The penguin tag reads: We wash you a Merry Christmas!
Grinch Cup
(We are an Amazon affiliate and may receive a small percentage of any sales through any links on this page at no cost to you. Thanks for supporting this website.)
This Grinch cup, nestled in tissue paper, has a tag with: Drink up Grinches… It’s Christmas!
You get the idea. You can make up a punny card for almost any gift. The gifts in our game are not all of equal value. I feel that is a lesson in life for older kids. Not everything is fair. But we have Sophie help Memphis choose her gift, which is clearly manipulated for the toddler. She always gets #1. Soon, she won’t get that advantage.
Favorite Cheesy Gift
One of my favorite gifts over the years is the Bucket of Bucks. Placed in an inexpensive metal bucket, a few ‘rein-beers‘ peek over the edge. Along with some paper filler, a bunch of one-dollar bills, or ‘bucks’, rolled up and tucked in among the bottles make this gift even more fun.

I have played a version of this game many times in my Bible Study groups. I think it’s a lot of fun!
It is a fun game. It has become a fun family tradition. Thanks for stopping by!
We call this game Dirty Santa, dirty because you’re able to take/steal someone’s gift if you choose. We have an adult version and another one for the kids. It’s so much fun watching everyone. Your added sayings tags sounds fun too!
I’ve never heard Dirty Santa before! Too funny! Thanks, Dee!
