There are all kinds of ways to make your Christmas tree special this year. After you have your tree up, the first consideration is the lights. I don’t know about you, but I like our largest tree to be a blinking beacon! Lol! Technically, it is not blinking but it could be a beacon. You can be a little more conservative if you like but this is one time where over the top is definitely in order.

The Lighting For A Christmas Tree
The 8-foot tree in the family room glows from the inside out with around 22 sets of clear string lights. It takes an entire day for me to retrieve the tree from the basement, assemble it, and string the lights!
You can see in the picture that strings of lights are wrapped around the branches, starting from the top. Starting at the base of each branch, wrap the string all the way to the tip. Hold the light on the tip and with one hand, string the lights under the branch and to the base of the next branch. Then, wrap the next branch in the same way. Repeat the process.
You will be amazed at how this lights up your tree! Imagine just stringing the lights on the outside branches and then, look how this lights up the entire tree! Sometimes I miss a branch, but I try to wrap every branch. It looks spectacular with just the lights!
Adding Silk Flowers
If you choose to add silk flowers or dried flowers, now would be the time. I love creating a spiral with velvety poinsettias. We have red, white, and rose-colored poinsettias in our stash. One year, instead of the swirl, I placed them evenly all over the tree. You should place these on the tree before hanging the ornaments. Add a Christmas angel or create a topper using one of the poinsettias in addition to a few floral picks.
Add Ribbons, Beads, Or Garland
If you are using ribbons, beads, or garland, now is the time to add those elements. A few years ago, Sophie and I were shopping at Macy’s and saw a ribbon effect on one of their Christmas trees. Multiple ribbons layered together, secured at both ends, decorated this tree.
That year, I bought this red and swirled gold ribbon and created this gorgeous ribbon effect.
I love this ribbon technique! You can find complete step by step directions for making these layered ribbon lengths ◄ here.
Check out the picture below to see this same technique used with a sheer gold ribbon for a more subtle effect.
Hanging The Ornaments On Your Christmas Tree
The next step is to hang ornaments, evenly around the tree. Start with the largest ornaments first. Space those out around the tree evenly. Remember to distribute color evenly around the tree, too. Then, hang smaller ornaments around the larger ones.
Filler Ornaments
The last ornaments to hang on the tree are filler. Plain ball ornaments are perfect for this. You can reinforce your main colors with these inexpensive ornaments. Choose one or two colors and spread them throughout the tree.
Even if you limit the color, you can make it a little more interesting by using, some covered with glitter, some with a matte finish, some with an interesting texture, and some with a shiny finish. These are perfect for tucking in behind other more decorative ornaments and for filling in bare spots. The shiny ornaments reflect the lights and the other ornaments creating an even more beautiful effect. Tiny mirrors would do the same thing.
Hopefully, there are a few tips here, which will inspire you when decorating your Christmas tree this year or next! But wait! What about the finishing touch? The presents under the tree need to be considered, too! Click here ► for wrapping techniques and color consideration.

Cheryl, I shopped the after Christmas sales when lights were dirt cheap. I would like to go to LED lights but, yikes! Maybe I’ll take my own advice and start buying those at the end of this season, too. Thanks for visiting!
