Fall Mantel Display Ideas - Decorate an Autumn Mantel You'll Love

Just across the river in Rising Sun, Indiana, I picked up a gorgeous Autumn Harvest decorative sign at the gift shop at Morris Lawn and Landscape.  Do you love the Autumn Harvest sign as much as I do?  This sign is the inspiration for the fall mantel display this year.

The sign measures 12 inches x 38 inches.

Beginning the fall decorating is not an easy thing for me to do.  This requires the admission that summer is almost over and chilly weather is coming.  Sigh…

You Can Create a Beautiful Mantel Display

Before we begin, you might be curious as to why I am guiding you through creating a mantel display step-by-step. Often, when presented with a finished project, individuals feel intimidated and unsure of how to begin. By breaking down the process into manageable steps, without overwhelming you, it becomes easier to envision yourself creating a similar display.

Additionally, as I demonstrate each step, you can easily substitute the items I use with your own personal items.  All of the decorative pieces used in this display, with the exception of the sign, are things I already had.  It’s a good idea and economical to shop your house, too.

After hanging the sign, I positioned the amber bottle in the center of the mantel.  The two decorative arches are placed on either side of the sign.

Then, I spotted the wired glass vase.  Since we only have one of these, I moved the amber bottle to the left and placed it on the right.  The small metal box with a lid helps balance the larger glass vase.

Place pumpkins.

To pull the color of the sign down to the mantel, two ceramic pumpkins are set on the outside of the decorative arches.

Place candles and books on the mantel.

Adding two candles with candleholders next to the decorative arches helps create visual triangles.  The smaller candle needs some height.  I added three of my favorite James Whitcomb Riley books.

You can see the amber bottle, metal box, and glass caged vase create the foundation for the center triangle.  You can see the pumpkins, decorative arches, and candles create visual triangles, too.

Add bead garland.

Next, I added two lanterns and two beaded garlands.  The beaded garland is such a simple thing, but look what a difference this makes!

A little iron mouse placed on the left end and a little iron bird on the right end further enforce the outer visual triangles.

I think the display looks pretty nice at this point.  Adding a fall pick to each of the lanterns and another pick with the same fall colors between the amber bottle and caged glass vase pulls the orange color into the arrangement further.

Lastly, a small muted orange pumpkin is added and silk sunflowers tucked in between the decorative items across the mantel are the finishing touches.
