Isn’t this inexpensive patriotic votive adorable? The glitter gives it elegance, too. Imagine several of these in a tablescape or in a patriotic table display!

As I made the beach-themed votive, the idea for this patriotic votive was born. On a shopping trip to Michael’s, I picked up a package of star brads.
Supplies Needed
- Clean empty Oui Yogurt Jar
- Clear Gloss Mod Podge
- Red fine glitter
- Paintbrush
- Washi tape
- Krylon Glitter Sealer
- Glue gun
- Scissors
- Patriotic ribbon
- Star brad paper fastener
- Button
Votives Directions
First, wrap some Washi tape just under the rim of the jar. The yogurt jar is smaller at the top and gradually larger as it stretches to the bottom. The tape along the top edge might need pleating a little in places. That is not a problem, but you don’t want pleats on the bottom edge. To make it easy to remove the tape, fold the end back on itself.
Paint the clear gloss Mod Podge, starting in the middle of the Washi tape, brushing away from the tape. This will lessen the chance of glue seeping under the tape.
Once the side of the jar is covered in Mod Podge, put your fingers inside the opening and turning the jar on your fingers, sprinkle fine glitter liberally over the glue. Make sure all of the wet Mod Podge is covered with glitter. If you are doing multiple jars, repeat for each of the jars. Remove the Washi tape and allow the jars to dry overnight.

Notice that I had a very small tube of the red glitter. While it was enough to cover the jar, the tube emptied quickly as it was sprinkled over the glue. I had to keep pinching glitter off the paper and sprinkling it on the glue. This glitter just happened to be in my stash. I would definitely suggest getting a larger bottle!
Seal With Glitter Sealer
At this point, use Krylon Glitter Sealer to seal the glitter if you like and allow this to dry for 12 hours or overnight.
Adding The Ribbon and Star Brad Paper Fastener
It just so happened that I had a small piece of red, white, and blue ribbon. I bought the star brad paper fasteners for another patriotic project I’m planning. Looking at the brads next to the ribbon, the realization that the star is just not big enough for the ribbon, set in.
Brainstorming, the idea of adding a button came to mind. Initially, I thought about cutting off the feet of the brad, but with a button, the feet can just be inserted into a hole and bent to secure.
Gluing the Ribbon
First, cut a piece of ribbon allowing excess to cut after securing the ribbon to the jar. Fold the ribbon in half, dab a dot of glue either on the jar or on the ribbon at the halfway mark. Place the ribbon on the jar.
Remember that these yogurt jars are slightly smaller at the top. When the ribbon is wrapped, it will have to be tilted slightly downward. Dab another dot of glue on the opposite side of the jar and gently pull the ribbon to the front and onto the glue.
Place another dot of glue in the middle of the previously glued ribbon and gently pull the other ribbon end over the first at an angle.
Trim the ribbon ends at an angle.
Applying The Button and Star Brad
First, insert the brad feet into one of the holes in the button. By turning the star brad slightly, it covers all the holes. Open the feet and secure the brad to the button.
Apply hot glue to the back of the button and place it in the middle of the ribbons where they overlap.
Add a tea light or small votive candle. Isn’t this gorgeous? Imagine several of these shimmering candles as part of a tablescape.

Thank you, Pamela! That is the nicest compliment! Thank you for visiting again!
Love it! I see now where you can buy various lids for those jars on Amz. Thanks so much for linking up at A Themed Linkup 115 for All Things American and Patriotic. Pinned.
Thanks, Dee! A few years ago, you could only buy the lids from the company. These little jars come in so handy, I’ve bought a few packs of the lids. It’s good to know you can find them on Amazon!
