Package A Cookie Idea Is Born
This idea was born after my son and daughter-in-law bought gift boxes for homemade fudge last year. Emily wanted to give a little homemade treat to her manicure customers. The packages ended up requiring more fudge than they had originally intended. Sometimes those premade collapsed boxes you can find at the craft store are much bigger than you visualize!
When I saw Christine’s biscuit packaging idea for a wedding reception, ◄ (You can see her post and download her template through this link, too.) it seemed a better idea. I think it’s brilliant, cute, and so simple. It’s a perfect little take-home treat!
Decorative Paper Pads for Cookie Packages
(We are an Amazon affiliate and may receive a small percentage of any sales through this link at no cost to you. Thanks for supporting this website!)
Everyone knows about all of the pads of decorative cardstock available to us today, like the Halloween papers I used for the mantel pennant. There are many kinds available for Christmas, every holiday, every season, and more. With one of these pads of paper, you don’t have to worry about matching or coordinating papers. The work is already done for you. All the papers work together perfectly.
Supplies Needed for Cookie Packages
You will need:
- Pad of Decorative Cardstock
- Freezer Wrapping Paper
- Downloaded Template
- Ruler
- Pencil or Mechanical Pencil
- Scissors
- Double-sided Tape or Elmer’s Dot Runner
- Kitchen Twine or Ribbon
- Homemade Cookies
Directions For How to Make the Cookie Package
First, you will need to download the cookie package template and print it onto cardstock. With scissors, cut out the template. On the backside of a sheet of decorative cardstock, trace the template you made lightly with a pencil. You can trace two on a 12″ x 12″ paper.
Cut out the tracing. I cut the two traced shapes out loosely. Then, using the paper cutter, I trimmed off the outside angles. You can easily use scissors to cut the angles away from the shape.
Place an adhesive dot or a piece of double-sided tape on one of the flap ends on the plain white backside of the decorative paper.
Wrap the Cookie in Freezer Paper
For each package, cut a 5-inch square from freezer paper. The waxy side will contain any grease from butter or shortening, keeping the decorative paper in good shape.
Then, wrap the cookie in the freezer paper. Just pull opposite corners together following the pictures above. This will keep the cookie fresh and keep oils from penetrating the decorative cardstock. When you are making your cookies, you will want to consider the size of your little wrap. The snowflake cookies I made for this post are 3-inch cookies. (I would probably decorate these a little more for Christmas, but they are delicious just like this! Dave has already had half a dozen!) If you make larger cookies, you will have to adjust the size of the template and the freezer wrap.
Wrap the Cardstock Cutout Around the Cookie
Set the wrapped cookie in the middle of the decorative cardstock cutout. Roll the dot runner along the edge of the tab or add a piece of double-sided tape. Then, fold up the two flaps on each side of the flap with the adhesive dots or tape. Don’t crease the folds. You want a rolled edge. Next, fold up the remaining flap without the dot and secure the flap with the dot on top of it. Isn’t this so cute?
Create A Tag for Your Cookie Package
You can download and print these tags if you like, create your own, or use some stickers. This tag reads, “A sweet treat for you. Merry Christmas!” Use a paper cutter to cut out the tags easily. Punch a hole in the top left corner to thread the kitchen string or ribbon through for attaching to the cookie package or glue to the top of the cookie wrap. I used a 1/8-inch paper punch to make a hole in the tag for the twine. Thread the twine through the hole and tie the kitchen twine or a pretty ribbon around the package making a little bow on top.
