Step 1 – Lights for a Stunning Christmas Tree
There are 22 sets of lights on this tree! They are wrapped around almost every branch! It takes about one day to cart the tree, two sections at a time, from the basement to the family room, set it up, and put the lights on it. At the end of the day, I always plug the lights in and just enjoy the beauty of over 2200 twinkling lights. (Some sets are 150 and some are 100.)
The 8-foot tree in the family room glows from the inside out with around 22 sets of clear string lights. It takes an entire day for me to retrieve the tree from the basement, assemble it, and string the lights! You can see in the picture that strings of lights are wrapped around the branches, starting from the top. Starting at the base of each branch, wrap the string all the way to the tip. Hold the light on the tip and with one hand, string the lights under the branch and to the base of the next branch. Then, wrap the next branch in the same way. Repeat the process. You will be amazed at how this lights up your tree! Look how this lights up the entire tree! Sometimes I miss a branch, but I try to wrap every branch. It looks spectacular with just the lights!
Step 2 – Layered Ribbon For A Stunning Christmas Tree
When Sophia and I were shopping several years ago, we saw Christmas trees at Macy’s. I noticed one of the trees had a ribbon treatment, which I had never seen before. Multiple pieces of ribbon were layered together and they were festooned on the Christmas tree. The result looked rich and gorgeous! The spools of ribbon I use have 50 yards of 2-1/2-inch wired ribbon. For our tree, I use virtually all of the ribbon on the roll. You do want a wired ribbon.
Cut the first piece about 36″ long. Using that ribbon as a guide, cut the next ribbon about 1″ longer, the next 1″ longer than the one before, and so on. Cut four more ribbons in total. You will have 5 in each cluster.
Line up one end of each of the ribbons, right sides up, and staple. See the picture above. Then, line up the ribbons on the opposite end and staple them together. The stapled ribbon ends will be tucked into the branches of the tree and won’t be visible.
Add these pieces in a swirl around the tree, beginning at the top.
Continue swirling the stapled ribbon lengths around the tree, tucking in the ends. Use your fingers to pull some of the ribbon edges out to make them more visible. In the featured image, you can see the ribbon clusters in a sheer gold ribbon version.
Step 3 – Add A Topper And A Swirl Of Festive Silk Flowers For A Stunning Christmas Tree
Don’t you love the addition of a topper for the Christmas tree? You know the tippy top of the tree is not that stable. You can even extend the height of the tree slightly with this addition! So, I use a 36 – inch long 1/4-inch dowel painted green to add support. Just use florist wire to attach silk flowers and other decorations to the green dowel. Leave several inches at the bottom to secure the dowel to the sturdier center of the tree with florist wire. Next, begin adding more silk flowers in a swirl around the tree. I don’t wire these onto the branches. The poinsettia stems and leaves inserted in between the branches of a dense tree like this one will hold the flower in place.
Step 4 – Decorate A Stunning Christmas Tree With Ornaments
(We are an Amazon affiliate and may receive a small percentage of any sales through the links in this post at no cost to you. Thanks for supporting this website!)
Now, add ornaments to the tree. Begin with the largest ornaments and space them out around the tree. Then, begin hanging the middle-sized ornaments and, lastly, hang the smallest ornaments. After all of the ornaments we have collected over the years have been added to the tree, I fill in with inexpensive filler ornaments, ◄ like these.
At the end of the season, large containers of ornaments like these can be picked up cheaply at craft and home stores. Think ahead for next year.
These inexpensive plastic ornaments are perfect for hanging with your unique ornaments. They are also perfect for tucking behind some of the smaller ornaments. An ornament in a contrasting color can call more attention to the special ornament. Sometimes there is a bare opening in artificial trees. I hang or tuck the inexpensive ornaments in those spaces.
Step 5 – Coordinate Beautiful Wrapped Gifts With Your Stunning Christmas Tree
Beautifully wrapped gifts that coordinate with your decorated Christmas tree are the finishing touch. You see, the presents are just an extension of your tree. Realizing that and planning ahead will ensure that your tree will be stunning.

Do you know how you just rocked my tree ribbon world! My husband just told me on the weekend that he’ll help decorate next weekend but he’s going downstairs during the ribbon process. The time, the cuss words, the near tears to get the same look by wrapping the spools of ribbon around the entire tree! This is brilliant! I’ll be back on the weekend to study your pictures again. Your tree is GORGEOUS!
That is awesome, Marie! When I saw this technique, I was amazed, too, and it’s so simple! Can’t wait to see your tree!
Very pretty and I love the way you did the ribbons!!
Thank you, Tania! This ribbon technique is so easy but it does look lush, doesn’t it?
