Remember the snowman ornaments from a couple of weeks ago? I promised a post on how to make some hats for these cute snowman ornaments.
You can find the post on how to make cute snowman ornaments ◄ here.
Supplies Needed for Snowman Hats
- Socks
- Needle and Thread
- gold or silver thread
- Scissors
- jingle bells
- tiny decorations
- hot or low-melt glue gun and glue sticks
The socks for these can be picked up at the dollar store. I like the fuzzy women’s socks but the thinner striped socks are good for making a long tail on a hat.
I picked up these tiny ornaments at Hobby Lobby.
Directions For Making Hats for Cute Snowman Ornaments
Snowman Hats Version #1
First, I like to put the sock on the snowman ornament to decide where to cut it. This little hat is going to have a long tail. For this type of hat, cut the sock just above the heel. Just cut across one of the stripes.
Then, remove the hat from the ornament and turn it inside out.
With a threaded needle, make a running stitch about a quarter-inch from the cut edge.
Next, pull the thread tight gathering the opening. Push the needle through the gathered fabric. Wrap the thread tightly around the gathered stitches and push the needle through again.
Then, push the needle through the fabric to the right side coming out in the center.
This is where you attach the jingle bell with the needle and thread.
Place the hat on the snowman ornament. Use a needle and gold or silver thread to attach a hanger. Set the snowman ornament on top of a small jar or glass. Then, hot glue small greenery, berries, pinecones, or decorations to the hat.
Snowman Hats Version #2
For this hat, use one of the fluffy socks. Each sock can make two hats. To make this hat, you will need to cut the sock as shown in the picture by cutting the heel away. We will be using the cut piece with the toe.

For this sock hat, you will need a little piece of Poly-fil batting or cluster stuffing to make the pom-pom. Just take a small amount of the stuffing and place it in the toe of the sock. With your thumb and forefinger grasp the sock underneath the ball of stuffing forming a nice little pom-pom.
Next, wrap a string or heavy thread around the base of the pom-pom and tie it tightly.
Then, using yarn or ribbon, wrap over the string and make a pretty bow.
Next, roll the cut edge up two times making a little cuff around the bottom. Pull the hat over the snowman’s head.
Snowman Hats Version #3
For this hat, cut the men’s sock below the heel. Since this sock is larger, you won’t need as much for the hat.
Roll the cut edge up twice to create a cuff on the hat.
For this sock hat, cut a 1-inch square of plaid flannel fabric. Find a coordinating button and hot, or low melt glue the buttons to the squares.
Then, glue the fabric square to the hat.
There it is, another completely different look for these easy-to-make snowman ornaments.
I have a few more to make but you can see how easy these little hats can be made from socks.
