How To Create a Stunning Christmas Kitchen Window Display

Create a stunning Christmas kitchen window display!  Remember the Fall kitchen window display?  The display starts with a couple of iron brackets.  If you like shopping at flea markets or antique shops, you have probably seen these brackets.

I picked these up at Blue Willow House in Dillsboro, Indiana.  In the kitchen area of this little shop, I noticed a rod sitting on two of these brackets and I just think it is a very clever idea and the uses for every season are endless!  You can find a similar bracket on Amazon.  You can find that post by clicking on the link below.

The fall kitchen window display included a fall fabric hanger and bow.  Using the same technique, I use some Christmas fabric in my stash of fabrics.  It seems a perfect addition to the Christmas kitchen window display.

Decorate The Lanterns

Surround the votives with tiny red ornaments.
Surround the votives with tiny red ornaments.

This is simple and easy.   Initially, the plan was not to use these silver lanterns, but they almost perfectly match the color of the ‘Let it Snow’ sign I chose.  I use the same battery-operated votives and add several little red shiny and glittered ornaments.  The candles in the link above each have a timer, which will make it easy on you.

How simple is that?

Cut the Fabric For Hanging

To support the weight of the lanterns, I decide to use fabric again.  Although twine will work for this, the idea is to have something pretty that is sturdy enough to support the lanterns.

This fabric is 100% cotton and 45 – inches wide.  First, fold the fabric in half.  You will have a folded piece of fabric about 22.5 – inches wide.  Then, fold the fabric in half again.  Your folded fabric should be about 11.25 – inches wide.  It is easy at this point, to use a rotary cutter and a ruler to cut the fabric into a 3 – inch strip.

Then, open the fabric strip, line up the ends on your cutting mat, and cut the selvage edge away from each end.

Next, to add a little more strength and to look better visually, fold the sides into the middle and iron, creating a 1- inch wide center section.

Fold both sides of the middle section inward.

Notice that I did not finish the edges.  This ironed middle section ended up being about 1 – inch wide and about 12 – inches in length.  I left enough to create a bow with the tails.

Tie a double knot and then, a bow.

Then, tie an overhand knot and slip the loop over the dowel.  Pull the knot down to the hanger on the top of the lantern and create a pretty bow using the full 3 – inch width.

After making the bow, trim the ends at an angle.  There isn’t a long tail on each of these, so the angle isn’t as sharp as I would like, but it’s enough.

The ‘Let it snow’ sign from Michael’s already has hangers on it.  First, cut two 1-inch strips of the Christmas fabric.  These strips are 24-inches long.  Then, thread one of the strips of fabric through each hanger and tie them to the dowel to hang the sign.

The Christmas fir garland is delicate, understated, and I love it.  Just draping it loosely over and around the black dowel and the ‘Let it Snow’ sign, the garland makes a nice textural element and echoes the off-white color in the sign and the decorations in the lanterns.

The ‘Merry Christmas’ sign centered between the two Christmas soldiers adds some interest and weight to the window display.  Although this display is simple, it adds interest and just a bit of Christmas cheer to our kitchen.
