- 2 contrasting gift wraps or reversible gift wrap
- Sharp scissors
- Clear double-sided tape
- Sealing Wax Kit
- 6-piece Christmas Wax Seal Set
Gift wrap often comes packaged with coordinating patterns and colors. You can use any two contrasting gift wraps for this technique. You can imagine that a pattern contrasted with a solid color will really set off this particular gift-wrapping technique.
A reversible gift wrap will be perfect for this application, too! The coordinating work is already done for you. Just flip it and use the other side!
Although I have been using double-sided tape for a long time, I was watching some videos where I saw how easy it is to use Angel Crafts 1/4″ easy tear tape. I highly recommend this tape! This stuff makes wrapping gifts even easier!
Wrapping The Gift
The beauty of this technique is that it looks good and works well with rectangular or square packages. The depth of the package doesn’t really matter either.
To begin with, you wrap the box as you traditionally would using one of the papers you have chosen. Cut the paper to size. Next, lay a piece of double-sided tape along one edge. Then, fold the paper over the box and secure it. Finish the ends as normal using double-sided tape.
Cut The Contrast Wrap
Then, you need to cut a strip of contrasting paper the same height as the package and long enough to wrap around the gift box and overlap. Lay the wrapped box on the paper and mark it with a pinched crease. Remove the box. Next, lay the gift wrap back on itself, making sure the edges line up along the bottom. That assures that you will have a straight edge. Crease all the way across the width of the paper.
Folding The Decorative Strip
Then, cut along the crease.
Lay the sheet of paper out, fold down the top and bottom edges about one-half inch, and crease.
Next, decide where you want the ends to overlap.
Place the box on top of the strip of wrapping paper. Line up where you want the paper to go and how much you want it to overlap. If the paper strip is too long, trim any excess off the end. Crease the paper along the edges of the box.
Then, bring the corners of one end together, find the middle, and make a small crease on the very end.
Lay the wrap flat. Then, from the bottom crease, fold over the paper to line up with the center crease you made on the end. (See picture above.)
From the top crease, fold the end of the paper to line up with the center crease again, creating an angle. If necessary, fold any excess paper under and crease it so it won’t be seen.
Repeat on the opposite end of the wrap.
Tape The Contrast Strip To The Gift Box
Adhere strips of double-sided tape on each side of an angled end.
Peel back and remove the backing. Adhere the taped end to the package.
Then, overlap and tape the other end. Isn’t this package beautiful all around?
Finish With A Beautiful Wax Seal
Remember the wax seal adorning the wheat bundles? If you need a step-by-step DIY on how to make these revisit this post.

This set of Christmas Stamps for wax seals came from Amazon. I have more ideas for these stamps but I think a simple wax seal is perfect for this version of gift wrapping.
Heat the wax pieces over a tea light. Then, pour the melted wax over the angle point on the gift wrap.
It’s best to set the stamp on ice to cool it. Just put ice in a Ziploc bag. Let the stamp rest on the ice until you’re ready to use it. Then, set the stamp on the melted wax. Allow it to cool for a few seconds. It should release easily.
You can use a marker to highlight the raised areas on the seal. In this case, a gold marker is used.
I love this wrapping technique and it’s a great way to use those wax seals!
