The kimono fold gift-wrapping technique looks complicated, but it’s really quite simple. I’ve seen so many different gift-wrapping ideas using folds and pleating and this is one of my favorites. Just imagine all the oohs and aahs you’ll get when they see your perfectly wrapped gifts!
Cutting The Gift Wrap
First, you’ll need to cut a piece of wrapping paper to size. Place the box on the paper and loosely wrap the paper around the width of the box. Add 1/2 – inch and cut along the line if your gift wrap has cut lines. If your paper does not, mark the 1/2- inch with a pinch of your fingers, and then fold the paper back on itself using the pinch mark as your guide. Make sure the bottom edges line up before folding and creasing the line. Then, cut along the fold line.
Cut all the way across the gift wrap. Set the gift wrap roll to the side.
Set the box back on the gift wrap. Pull the gift wrap up over the length of the box and once again, add 1/2 – inch. Then, cut.
Creating The Kimono Fold
First, center the box on the cut piece of gift wrap. This is really easy to do with the gift wrap that has the cut lines on the backside.
Next, pull the top edge of the paper down over the box to just a little above the bottom edge.
Crease the gift wrap along the top edge. Pull the gift wrap back against the short edge. Then, crease the short edge of the box.
Hold the paper along the box edge, press the flap down, and crease the outside edge on each of the flaps.
Repeat on the other side, making sure the corner is against the edge of the box and the table (or hard surface) where they meet.
Fold one of the top flaps over the top of the box and hold it securely. Then, fold the opposite flap over the first.
Now, fold the remaining two flaps up and over the top of the box.
Finishing The Bottom
Hold the kimono fold firmly as you fold in the sides of the gift wrap. Crease the flaps along the edges. You should have a triangular-shaped flap. See the picture below.
Apply double-sided tape to the top flap. Remove the backing on the tape.
Then, fold the bottom flap up and the top flap down. I personally think it looks best with the flap pointed downward. I’ve seen a lot of people wrapping gifts with the points facing up. It is up to you!
This package looks beautiful just like this, but you can embellish it.
