How to make gift tags easily? This little We R Memory Keepers tag punch board easily helps you create tags from 1-inch to 3-1/2 – inches wide. Just imagine! You can make your own gift tags for Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas, birthdays, and any other occasion.
Do you keep all of those little pieces of decorative cardstock you don’t want to pitch and yet you don’t know how to use them? Isn’t this the perfect idea for those?
Cutting Out The Tag
First, you must cut a rectangle the size of the tag you want. In this case, the rectangle is 5-3/4 inches long and 2-3/4 inches wide. I chose this red and pink rose floral print. It doesn’t scream Valentine, but it will look classy.

Using The Tag Punch Board
Before you buy one of these, realize that it is a little punch board measuring just 5 – inches x 5.5 – inches. If you are heavy-handed or planning to use heavy cardboard, this is not the punch board for you. It works nicely on regular cardstock and paper. I love it because it is so compact!
Position The Paper
Lift the hinged cutting track. Place the paper rectangle underneath. Make sure you have the design print top side up and facing the right direction. Align the top right corner to the desired angle line. Note the line that you choose! You need to use the same line for both corners.
Position The Blade
Insert the blade into the cutting track and cut. There’s a little knob that fits into the hinged cutting track. Then, the blade is positioned on the track correctly.
Flip the paper and position the paper corner, aligning to the same angle as the first.
Use The Hole Punch
Place the top of the tag under the punch and align it with the centering lines.
Press the button to punch the hole in the paper tag.
Decorate The Gift Tag
Here, you can be as creative as possible. Cut out heart shapes, pull out your decorative scissors, use an embossing tool to emboss paper, search through your button box, and craft supplies. Washi tape comes in so many patterns, it’s perfect for decorating tags. Go through your sewing stash. Fabrics, ribbons, gimp, lace, and other decorative trims can be used.
I created the banners on each of these tags using PicMonkey. You can use your favorite photo editing and design service.
Layout the decorative elements on top of the gift tag. Play with the elements until you have a pleasing layout.
Attaching The Decorative Elements
First, glue the embossed paper on the tag. If you have followed me for a while, you know that my favorite glue is Tacky Glue.
Then, use the tag punch board to trim off the top corner of the embossed paper. Next, glue the remaining elements in place.
Notice that I ended up eliminating one of the hearts. As I started gluing the elements, the rose on the pattern spoke to me. It just needed to be visible. So, I eliminate the extra heart.
Another Gift Tag Idea
I love the embossed papers on these tags. Layer the embossed papers on top of the patterned tag. The red glitter heart is from Dollar Tree. The pack has pink and red glitter hearts.
I’m working on another tag using fabric and Wonder Under. Check back for an easy DIY! You’ll probably want to sign up for our e-mail or follow us on Facebook!
