While searching for ideas for a Valentine’s Day mantel idea, I came across a picture of a beautiful display. It inspired this Valentine’s Day mantel.
Studying the picture, I made a mental list of things needed for a similar display. A quick trip to Hobby Lobby netted me most of the decorative items. Once home, I quickly set the items on the mantel to get an idea of how it was going to look.
As I looked at it, it just looked kind of sparse. Going back to look at the inspiration picture, I realized there is an artificial fir garland behind and under the Valentine’s decorations. Duh! Did not even notice that!
After putting away all of the Christmas decorations, the idea of unpacking any of those is the last thing I want to do. Fortunately, an appointment the next day would take me near Michael’s craft store. I remember seeing their Christmas decorations are 80 % off right now. Once there, a very pretty garland caught my eye. After the discount, it ended up being 15 bucks.
Valentine’s Day Mantel Step-by-Step
First, place the arch in the middle of the mantel. The decorative arch adds some pattern and height. Lay the garland in front of the arch and across the mantel. The warm gold ribbon on the garland is perfect with the two ribbons I chose for tucking along the base.
The wide sheer ribbon adds interest and background for beige linen ribbon edged in gold.
Two clear 3m Command Strips hold the Kisses and Hugs signs.
Next, I drape the velvet heart and wood bead garland across the fireplace below the mantel. You can find out how to make your own velvet heart and wood bead garland ◄ here.
You can’t see them, but on each side of the fireplace mantel I’ve hammered in a small finishing nail. A half-inch of the nail protrudes and is what I use for attaching garlands and banners. The two sparkly hearts have a ribbon hanger that is draped over the nails.
Notice that the paper heart garland threads through the twine hangers on the two wooden signs for support.
Next, two ribbon bows are attached at each end.
There isn’t a perfect place to hang these signs. So, I bend the wire to the back of the hangings and place them next to the large metal LOVE sign on either side.
I was puzzled over how to hang the polka-dot heart and the red heart hangings. After some brainstorming, I came up with the idea of using two of those balloon weights with some red and white twine. Placed behind the garland, the weights can’t be seen and they are heavy enough to support the heart hangings.

Lastly, I added some red-glittered puffy heart picks and two LOVE sign decorations.
Here it is! I’m also making an upcycled wine cork wreath to hang on the decorative arch. It is coming out so cute. You’ll have to be sure to come back to see it.
