If you want to make a unique journal for your little girl, the internet is full of inspiring ideas. From my own experience, I’ve scoured Pinterest, tried and tested numerous ideas, and discovered some personal favorites. Below are several more ideas to consider for your little girl’s junk journal.
Here are some of the best ideas for a little girl’s junk journal found on the internet:
#1 Triple-Fold Envelope
This template prints on an 8-1/2 x 11-inch piece of paper or cardstock. The template is 11 inches long and 6 inches wide. Click here ► for the free template pdf.
First, cut the shape on the outside solid lines. Then, lay the template on the decorative cardstock and use the template to make light pencil marks to indicate the ends of the lines.
Fold along the long broken lines to the center of the middle section. Next, press the sides back down and fold on each of the three remaining dashed lines.
Cut on the solid lines from the corners to the inside corners of the outside rectangles. Fold the outside triangles upward on the creased line. Fold the middle crease inward.
Glue the triangular shapes into the middle section. Repeat for each of the other five triangular shapes. Your folded and glued shape should look like the shape below.
Fill the little pockets with pictures, picture cards, or ephemera.
Glue a ribbon or string to the backside of the bottom section. You’ll want to place it on the lower part of the section where the widest part of the triangular shapes will lay folded.

#2 Ribbon-Tied Envelope
This envelope first has a ribbon glued to the backside of the envelope. Then, the envelope is glued to the page. The flaps on this envelope are not glued. The tied ribbon holds the envelope shut.

You can make an envelope without it, but it is quick and easy with the We R Memory Keepers envelope punch board. Just follow the easy directions and make an envelope to fit nicely in your design. You can find a step-by-step designer envelope tutorial ◄ using the punch board here.
Open the monogrammed cover and inside is a little notebook.
#3 Open Envelope Pouch
This little pocket is easy to make with the We R Memory Keepers envelope punch board, too. For this pocket, I use the envelope dimensions for a 3 x 3-1/2 inch card. Cut a 5-3/4 inch square and use the 2-3/4 score line.
To make this pouch, follow the directions for making the envelope, but only score the first 3 sides.
Use Tacky Glue to glue the three folded flaps together.
Use Washi Tape or decorative paper to decorate the envelope. Add a word printed on a pennant, circle, or rectangle.
#4 Circular Pocket
This is such a cute little pocket and it’s so simple. Just cut 2 circular shapes from decorative cardstock. Cut one round in half. Apply Tacky Glue to the round edges of the half-round and place it on top of the full round.
Decorate with an inspirational word. Tuck ephemera, circles of text, or piano music, and tags into the little created pocket. The pocket can be glued to the journal or tucked into an envelope or pouch.
#5 Hidden Notebook
Cut 2 equal rectangles from cardstock. Apply glue to the outer edges of one of the rectangles about 1/8-inch from the edge. Sandwich and press the two rectangles together.
My intention was to use a rounded corner punch for the four corners, but I forgot. You’ll want to round the corners before you antique the edges. If you’re going to apply antiquing to the outer edges, do it now. Since this is for a little girl, I’ve limited the antiquing. It just didn’t seem appropriate.
The cardstock for this project measures 5-3/4 inches by 4 inches. Use a paper cutter to slice the top of the glued cardstock. The cut line is 1-1/4 inch from the top.
Once you cut the top off, you should have a pocket in both sections.
To make the notepad, cut a back from coordinating, matching, or contrasting cardstock. Test to make sure it will fit into the pocket easily.
Then, cut sheets of printer paper or lined paper the same size as the cardstock back. I cut six lined papers altogether. Staple the papers to the cardstock back in two places at the top.
Then, apply glue to the top edge of the cardstock back and to the top edge of the notebook paper.
Carefully, open the narrow pocket and slip the notebook into it. You might want to allow the glue to set up for a minute. Then, slip the notebook into the larger pocket. Voilà! You have a secret place for your little girl to write her thoughts.
#6 Folding Double Pocket
First, cut a rectangle 12 inches x 3-1/2 inches. Score and fold at 2-1/4 and 7-3/8 inches from the top. The top 2-1/4 inches should fold downward and the lower section folds upward.
Cut two rectangles 3-1/4 inches x 4 inches. Score and fold the 4-inch width 1/4-inch on each side, leaving a width of 3-1/2 inches.
Score and fold the bottom 1/4 – inch from the edge. Cut the corners so the tabs will lay flat as we did with the mermaid pocket earlier.
Before gluing the pocket to the page, glue a length of ribbon to the back of the pocket. Be sure to make it long enough to tie a pretty bow in the front.
Then, apply glue to all three of the tabs. Position one at the lower edge of the rectangular strip. Then, glue and position the remaining pocket at the lower fold.
Fill the pockets with tags, inspirational words, pictures, etc.
Any of these ideas will make your little girl’s junk journal more special!
