Recycle Christmas Cards Easily: A Simple and Cute DIY Project
When I began this project, I just assembled a variety of craft items I thought I might use. These little frames are from Dollar Tree. Initially, I planned to paint the frame and inset and possibly add fabric or decorative paper to cover the textured area.
Then, when I set the Santa card next to it, it seemed to be appropriate just as it is. The card chosen for this project has golden snowflakes in the design. A little glitter added to the frame makes it perfect.
Recycle Christmas Cards Easily Supplies Needed:
Once again, I chose Tacky Glue for this project Don’t use regular white school glue. It takes much longer to set. Tacky Glue sets up in a short amount of time.

- Old Christmas Cards
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Frame
- 2 piece – Plastic ornament
- Ribbon
- Tacky Glue
- Elmer’s Spray Glue
- Clear Glitter
- Small decorative items
Follow these simple steps to create your own ornament frame:
First, disassemble the frame.
Next, spray Elmer’s adhesive onto the top and sides of the frame. Quickly, sprinkle clear glitter all over the top and sides. I first used the regular glitter and then, sprinkled the fine glitter over top. Then, shake off any excess.
Allow the glue to dry for a few minutes. In the meantime, use the glass piece as a template to trace on a piece of decorative paper or cardstock to use as the background.
Cut out the shape with a paper cutter or scissors.
If the glass needs it, clean it with glass cleaner or a drop of Dawn in a little water. Microfiber cloth works great to remove the cleaner and leave the glass sparkling.
Reassemble the frame next. Lay the frame face down. Insert the glass piece. Then, lay the cut decorative paper face down on the glass.
Finish with the back and push the prongs down to hold it in place.
Next, lay one-half of the clear ornament on top of the card, choosing the portion of the graphic you want. In this case, it’s Santa.
Using Tacky Glue, apply a line of glue along the edge of the half ornament. Set the ornament, with the top and the hanger hole at the top, onto the card face over the area you want upward.
Squeeze a little glue onto the back of a small section of the ribbon. This is a red velvet ribbon. Place the ribbon on the outer edge of the ornament butting up against the hanger at the top. Continue gluing and adjusting the ribbon all around the edge. Then, cut the end and glue it in place on the opposite side of the hanger.
Next, create a little bow with the remaining ribbon and glue it in place covering the ends of the glued ribbon.
Then, apply Tacky Glue to the back of the card circle glued to the clear ornament half. Set the glued ornament half in place on the glass in the frame.
So, it looks adorable just like this, doesn’t it?
Then, I picked up several of the craft items and placed them on the frame and, or the bow. Sometimes, less is more. Ultimately, I simply cut apart a wired mini pinecone pick and glued three of the pinecones and the berries to the ribbon bow. Simple, but pretty.
This easy and cute DIY project is a great way to add a personal touch to your holiday decor and you’re reducing waste by upcycling old Christmas cards.
