While brainstorming unique and creative ways to decorate wooden bunnies, chicks, and carrots for Easter, I considered embellishing them with mandala dot painting.  Here’s my process.

While you can use items you have at home to make little dots, this set of mandala tools is relatively inexpensive and comes in handy for this project and more.

This technique involves using a series of dots to create intricate patterns that are both visually stunning and meditative to create.  The process is quite simple yet incredibly rewarding: you begin by selecting a range of vibrant colors.  Using different sizes of dotting tools, you can start layering dots in various sizes to form beautiful, symmetrical designs.

Each wooden piece becomes a unique work of art, as no two designs are ever exactly the same. The repetitive nature of dot painting is a delightful way to embellish these charming figures, and it offers a sense of tranquility and mindfulness, making it a perfect activity for relaxing afternoons. These decorated items make wonderful gifts and can add a personalized touch to seasonal decorations, bringing warmth and creativity into any space.

The little wooden chicks, bunnies, and carrots can sometimes be found at Dollar Tree or Hobby Lobby. If you can’t find them, I’ve added links to Amazon.

Supplies:

Directions:

The Basecoat

First, coat the front, back, and sides of the wooden shapes with a base coat of acrylic craft paint.  I chose black paint, but you can choose any color you prefer.

When I apply acrylic paint to wooden items, I always use a piece of brown paper bag to ‘sand’ between coats.  It smooths the paint.  Wait until the paint is dry, then lightly sand with the piece of brown paper bag.

Next, paint another coat of your base color, allow the paint to dry, and sand again.  Repeat if necessary.

Mandala Dots

It seems the paint colors I chose don’t show up on the black background so well with one layer.  I went back and added another layer of paint dots on those.  Just be aware that you might need to do the same.

Dot Mandala Bunny

This initial bunny was started by adding larger dots for his eye, one on his tail, one in the center of his body, and another on one ear. After that, I surrounded these with smaller dots, allowing creativity to flow freely.

Dot Mandala Chick

The design on this chick began with a stencil that comes with the mandala tools on the supply list.

I centered the stencil on the chick’s body and used one of the tools to make yellow dots along the curved edges of the stencil design.

Next, paint the eye, beak, and the central dot, along with the surrounding dots.  At this point, let the dots dry completely.

Then, lay the stencil back over the design, matching the earlier position.  Paint pink dots along the decorative edge of the curved design on the stencil.  More pink dots are added between the pink and yellow dots to fill in the shapes.

From there, I added more dots to fill in blank areas.

Dot Mandala Carrot

I liked using the stencil on the chick.  So, I chose another for the carrot.  Lay the stencil on the carrot.  Then, paint dots in the openings.  Fill in with more dots around the stencil shape.

The Mandala Process

The wonderful thing about mandala dot painting is that there is no wrong way to paint the dots and patterns.  Each creation is a unique expression of the artist’s vision and emotions. The meditative process invites a sense of calm and focus as you select colors and apply them to your canvas. With every dot, you breathe life into your design, transforming a blank surface into a tapestry of color and form.

Whether you’re using bold, bright hues or soft, soothing tones, each choice contributes to the harmony and balance of your piece. Experiment and let your creativity flow, for it is in this exploration that true artistry is found.
