Is this DIY striped ribbon wreath beautiful or what? You will be surprised at how simple it is to make this gorgeous wreath and the results are stunning! The inspiration for this wreath is this pin on Pinterest.
Supplies Needed For The Striped Ribbon Wreath
For this project, you will need a styrofoam wreath form. The one I used is a 14″ size wreath. You will need a striped ribbon. I found this ribbon on Amazon. The roll has 30 yards of 1-1/2″ ribbon, plenty for this project. There are different colors of ribbon you can choose. This particular roll of ribbon is black with a khaki stripe. The ribbon has a little bit of stretch, which is great for wrapping around the wreath. (We are an Amazon affiliate and may receive a small percentage of any sales through this link at no cost to you. For this 14″ wreath, it took roughly 12 yards of ribbon.
You will also need straight pins and scissors. Fabric glue or hot glue can be used, but why use those when simple straight pins will do the trick? The ribbon can be used again if you ever tire of the wreath.
Applying The Ribbon
First, you need to secure the ribbon. Cut the end of the ribbon so you have a nice edge. Place the ribbon end on what will be the backside of the wreath. Push three or four straight pins through the ribbon and into the wreath form securing the ribbon to the Styrofoam.
At first, I began wrapping the ribbon overlapping it too closely and wasn’t happy with it. Unwind the ribbon and begin again… This time, just the edge of the ribbon overlapped and happily, the results are much better.
The easiest way to wrap the ribbon and keep from getting in a tangled up twisted mess is to move the ribbon roll around and through the wreath each time. You will find that the ribbon still twists as you go. After securing the edge of the ribbon with a straight pin, pick up the ribbon roll and unwind the inevitable twisted ribbon.
Continue wrapping the ribbon, securing with a pin now and then, until the loose ribbon is close to where the ribbon started.
When the ribbon completely covers the wreath, cut the ribbon allowing enough extra to fold under the end. Make sure the end is on the backside of the wreath. You don’t want the end to be visible on the top or the bottom of the wreath.
Then, secure the end with straight pins.
Making The Bow
To create the bow, make two loops the size of the largest loops you want. (Remember to leave a generous tail. After you finish tying the loops and positioning the bow on the wreath, trim the tails.) This bow has 5 loops on each side. You can decide how many loops you want. Make some the same size and some smaller.
This grosgrain ribbon is not a very stiff ribbon.
After creating these loops, I cut a small piece of ribbon, wrapped it around the middle of the loops, and pulled it tight. The loops just drooped. After manipulating it for a while and being dissatisfied with the results, I removed the ribbon piece holding it together.
Holding the ribbon with two fingers in the middle of the loops, grasp one loop with your other hand and twist it to the right to face the opposite direction. Secure the twisted ribbon with your fingers. Repeat with the other loops. This gives some structure to the ribbon and the results are more appealing.
Secure with a small piece of ribbon, with the ends tied together in a double knot. Attach the bow to the wreath with a couple of straight pins pushed through the short ribbon close to the knot on both sides. Hide the ends easily behind the loops of the bow.
The Finished Wreath
Here is the finished striped ribbon wreath! To hang the wreath, wrap a short piece of ribbon around the top of the wreath and tie an overhand knot on the end. The loop is simply looped over a nail. You can make the loop bigger if you want or attach a wire to the back of the wreath.
This striped ribbon wreath is hanging over the fireplace and is part of the spring mantel display this year. Details for that will follow!
