Gardening Shortcuts and New Ideas for the Garden

Remember last year’s post on How to Plant Flowers in Containers Easily?  You may remember how I planted a hanging basket, plastic basket and all, in our front porch pots.  Dave gave me some flack, but never mind.  I did it anyway.  This is one of my best gardening ideas ever!

At the end of the season, I just removed the pot and replaced it with a fall pot.  No need to pull out old plants, pull out and detangle roots, or clean up spilled potting soil.

Last year, I explained to Dave that if these hanging baskets are okay to hang in the air, why wouldn’t they do as well buried in dirt?  It seems they would need less water.  The soil will insulate them in contrast with hanging in the air and drying out more quickly.   That is definitely what happened!  The flowers did so well, I’m using this simple technique again.

Gardening Shortcuts This Year

Since the flowers did so well in those front pots last year, I decided to do the same thing with the concrete pots next to the garage.  These pots dry out quickly.  It will be interesting to see if the plastic pots are also very helpful with retaining water nestled in these pots.  It certainly won’t hurt.

With this in mind, Dave and I took a trip over to Morris Lawn and Landscape in Vevay, Indiana.  We picked up these hanging pots for the concrete pots flanking the entry to our backyard.  Yellow petunias, blue lobelia, and red-scented geraniums.  The geraniums are just starting to bloom.

In total, we bought four hanging plants for the four pots you can see from the street.  ‘Planting’ these pots creates instant gratification!  There’s no waiting for the flowers to fill in.  It puts a big smile on my face every time I look at these pretty flowers.

We picked up several annuals to fill the pots in the backyard.

Mother’s Day Gift

Unbeknownst to me, Dave had called ahead and asked Danielle to make up a flower pot for me.  Awww!  I love it!

Although I would like to have it on the back deck, I want it to be enjoyed by people walking and driving by, too.  It’s placed on the walkway to the backyard.  Isn’t it so pretty?

The planter is filled with spikes, salmon-colored petunias, tiny white euphorbia, and scented geraniums.

Hummingbird Feeder

Danielle, the manager at Morris garden center, showed us this hummingbird feeder!

Who can resist this red glass bottle antique hummingbird feeder?  We’ve probably all heard not to add red dye to hummingbird food.  ◄ You can find homemade hummingbird food and other hummingbird tips here.  Still, the color red does attract the little birds.  This feeder is so pretty, too!
