How To Create A Stunning Thanksgiving Mantel

Want to create a stunning last-minute Thanksgiving mantel for your fireplace?  Last week, I hesitated to take down the 5 Little Pumpkins mantel display and Halloween banner.

When you balk at removing the display, I guess your decorations are successful, right?  Well, I reluctantly remove the crows, the pumpkins, the wreath, candlesticks, and the banner.

Clear Off Your Mantel and Place the Base Pieces

Center the Tray and Add two Candlesticks

The first step is to clear off the mantel.  After removing everything, I centered the large tray on the wall.   It seemed to beg for the two mercury glass candlestick holders, and I considered the burnt orange candles.  These actually gave me an idea to use primarily the orange colors for this display.

Thanksgiving Mantel Urns

Add Two Metal Urns

I remembered having seen a pin on Pinterest where someone had placed pumpkins on top of an urn.  Well, we have a couple of urns and imagining some of the faux pumpkins on them seems like a great idea.  These act as a pedestal visually giving the pumpkins more importance.

Add Large Pumpkins

Place a large pumpkin on each of the urns.  At this point, I decided it would be better if I had matching pumpkins.  It just so happened I had to make a trip out by the craft store and so, I decided to see if there happened to be another that would match one of these pumpkins or maybe two matching pumpkins.

Forget it!  There are only a few pumpkins left in the clearance areas and they will not do at all!  Note here, plan this earlier next year!  The ones I have will have to do…

Fall Mantel Inspiration

Thanksgiving Mantel Display Last Year

Remember the fall mantel display last year?  I used the same tray, the candlestick holders and candles, the pumpkins, gourds, and sunflowers.  This year, I want to pare it down a little bit and use mostly oranges.

Symmetrical mantel displays seem to be a common thread in almost all of my past displays.  If that is your preference, too, you might want to buy two of all the big and little decorative items you buy if you can.

Add More Orange Shades to The Thanksgiving Mantel Display

To add more orange shades to the Thanksgiving mantel, choose a couple of gourds and pumpkins.

Next, add autumn picks to each end.  I want this display to be more streamlined and not a lot of leaf and flower clutter.

What To Place in The Center of The Thanksgiving Mantel?

My first plan is to use this pretty mercury glass pumpkin in the center of the display and add a pumpkin on top of it.

It just doesn’t seem quite right, does it?  Maybe if I replace the brown picks with smaller mercury glass pumpkins, which I do not have.  Nope.  What else do I have?

At this point, I note that these picks did not have a lot of orange shades in them.  In fact, they have more brown shades, and the only other brown is on the rawhide ties on the candles.  Hmmm…  It needs a brown object in the center to tie in the browns.  After brainstorming for a little bit, I remember a squirrel that usually sits on top of the armoire in one of the bedrooms.  What is more autumn-like than a brown squirrel?
