Don’t you love the Christmas swags decorating outdoor lights this time of year? On a quick shopping trip on Saturday morning, I spotted two swags marked 60% off the regular price. A vision of these hanging under the lights on either side of the front door quickly took shape. In the cart, they went.
I had seen some Christmas bells at the Dollar Tree a couple of weeks ago. On the way home, I stopped and picked up six golden bells. They have two different styles. One is a sleeker style but the stockier bell is my choice.
Supplies Needed

- 2 greenery swags
- 4 plastic bells – 5″ tall – diameter at the bell opening is 4.5-inches
- 4 – 32mm silver jingle bells
- floral wire
- wirecutter
- Red Velvet 2.5 – inch wired ribbon
- coordinating 2.5 inches wide wired ribbon
Easy Directions For The Christmas Swags
First, remove the twist tie holding the ribbon bow and berries to the top of the bell.
Then, attach a jingle bell to a piece of floral wire. The wire needs to be long enough to thread through the holes in the top of the bell. I position the jingle bell to hang down about a half-inch from the bottom and, then, twist and secure the wire to the top.
Next, cut the greenery in half at the top of the loop with a wire cutter.
Lay the swag flat on your work surface. Position the bells with the jingle bell clappers on top of the swag.
Since I am making two of these, I secure the bells on one to face toward the left and the bells on the second swag, to face toward the right. When you buy two swags, they normally face the same way. We have control over these!
When you have the bells where you want them, lift the swag slightly and thread the ends of the cut greenery ends through the swag. You want to attach the bells to one of the larger branches. Just use the ends of the cut greenery as twist ties to secure the bell.
At this point, I like to get a wreath or a swag up on the door or wall, so I can see how it looks.
Adding A Beautiful Ribbon Bow
You can find step-by-step directions for making a ribbon bow ◄ here. To make this, first, made a double bow using those same steps with the velvet ribbon. Then, wrap a piece of floral wire around the center to hold the bow together. Make the wire long enough to wrap around the center and also wrap around the top of the swag and twist to secure in the back.
Then gather the coordinating ribbon into a bow. Place it on top of the first bow, holding the two together in the center. Using another piece of the red velvet ribbon, wrap the ribbon around the middle of the two bows and tie in the back of the velvet bow knot.
Trim the tails.
After finishing the swags, I remove pinecones, ornaments, and ribbon bows from a wreath I created a couple of years ago. Then, I remove the bow and berries from the two remaining bells and add some pretty ribbon to create a coordinating wreath. The result is simple and understated elegance.
