How To Style A Fall Mantel In 5 Easy Steps

A beautiful mantel is a focal point in most homes that have a fireplace.  Here’s how to style a fall mantel in 5 easy steps.

Step 1 – Focal Point Inspiration Pieces For A Fall Mantel

Fall Mantel Inspiration

First, take everything off of the mantel and choose an inspiration piece or pieces.  This vase of sunflowers is the inspiration for this year’s fall mantel.  I also wanted to use these decorative arches.  After setting the arches on each side of the sunflowers, the arches and the vase of flowers were all almost the same height.  A book under the vase lifts the arrangement making it more interesting and more of a focal point.

Step 2 – Add Medium Height Foundation Pieces

Add lanterns on either side.

Two lanterns on each side, complete with candles in soft fall color, act as medium-height foundation pieces.  You can see a triangular composition coming together.

Step 3 – Large Filler Pieces

Place larger pumpkins

Start filling in the empty spaces between the foundation pieces by adding large fillers.  In this case, I’m adding large pumpkins and a gourd.  Notice that the large pumpkins are beginning to create a visual triangular composition on each side of the vase.  On each end, a ceramic pumpkin helps reinforce a visual triangle.

Step 4 – Add Smaller Pumpkins, Gourds, And Leaf Garland

Next, fill in with smaller pumpkins and gourds.

Eucalyptus leaf garland

To add interest, I cut this eucalyptus leaf garland and another just like it to tuck in between the pumpkins and other decorative items.  If the garland was just laid on the mantel, it would not have as much of a presence as the ‘hangy-down’ pieces.

Add more Eucalyptus leaves.

Step 5 – Brighten The Fall Mantel With Pretty Sunflowers

Finish with a few sunflowers

Doesn’t it seem that the mantel comes to life with sunflowers?  Just tuck sunflowers in and around the vase, lanterns, pumpkins, and gourds.

Also, notice that I cut the eucalyptus to follow the wooden arch on the fireplace.  That gave me a few more leaves to tuck in around the smaller pumpkins.
