With the summer coming up, picnics, and get-togethers, this is a perfect easy dessert. Quicker than cookies, who can resist delicious chocolate marble squares?
This recipe is one I found in the mid-seventies. It’s interesting when you look at the ingredients. It calls for 1/4 teaspoon of water. I puzzled over this. Why? The batter is a bit stiff. Maybe that tiny bit of water makes a difference…???
Regardless, they are delicious, and they did not last long!

Marble Squares
Ingredients:
- 1 cup plus 2 Tablespoons of flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup soft butter
- 6 Tablespoons sugar
- 6 Tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon water
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 375°. greased 13 x 9 x 2 – inch pan. (I prefer to use Non-Stick Reynolds Wrap. You don’t have to grease it and it makes it easy to remove from the pan.)
Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt together into a bowl and set aside.
Blend the soft butter, sugars, vanilla, and water.
Next, add the egg and beat it thoroughly.
Then, add the flour mixture and mix well.
Stir in the nuts.
Then, spread the mixture in the prepared 13 x 9 x 2 – inch pan. To make it easy, use a metal blade offset spatula for spreading.
Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips over the top of the batter.
Bake And Marble
Bake in a 375° oven for 2 minutes!
Remove from the oven and run a knife through the batter to marbleize.
Return to the oven and continue baking for 12 – 14 minutes.
Cool. Cut into 2-inch squares. Makes 2 dozen.
