Dauphin Island, Alabama is a great place to spend your vacation if you love the beach. That’s where we spent this last week. Remember we visited Dauphin Island last year when tropical storm Cristobal was just hitting? That was an experience and it was definitely interesting. Believe it or not, our family was anxious to return in spite of that storm.

Restaurants
Before we went to the beach house, we stopped at the Islanders Restaurant and Bar. Last year we did not stop here even though it is right on Bienville Boulevard.
Well, they served some of the best-fried shrimp I’ve ever had.
Although we made our own meals most of the week, our crab-lovers insisted we return to Capt’n Snapper’s Marina Bar & Grill.
Beach View
The weather was beautiful when we arrived a little over a week ago. The house on Bienville Boulevard we rented this year and last is right on the beach. The ocean view is perfect. Boats, planes, and helicopters can be seen on any day.
Can you believe how many pelicans are on this shrimp boat?
Birds On Dauphin Island
Each morning, I awoke early, made some coffee, and stepped out on the deck to enjoy the view. This crane perched on the neighbor’s deck one morning as the sun rose.
We saw plenty of seagulls. Memphis named one of them ‘Emmy.’
Pelican Bay
Wednesday, Dave and I walked the beach on Pelican Bay that lies on the east end of the island. There seem to be more seashells here than there are on the beach alongside our rental house. What is it about walking along the beach and having an overwhelming desire to gather seashells? Having seen so many seashell crafts, it’s obvious it’s not just me.
This year I collected a small stash of unique little shells. Last year, after the storm, there was an abundance of seashells. The pickings were a little slim this year.
Birds At Pelican Bay
As we strolled along the beach, once again this year, we caught sight of a couple of ospreys in a nest.
What a gorgeous bird!
We also spotted this Caspian Tern.
Shopping
There is not a lot of shopping on the island but there is a cute little shop called The Silver Pearl right on Bienville Boulevard. Last year they had some little silver beach-inspired bowls and matching knives that caught my eye. This year, they have a few and I couldn’t resist buying a set.
There is also a Beach Planet store with a variety of beach toys, clothing, jewelry, and gift items. Dave visited the Ship & Shore Supplies store several times. They have beer and liquor, groceries, hardware, beach toys, and fishing tackle.
On the east end of the island, for the more adventurous, there’s a ferry to the mainland and Gulf Shores. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants there. The kids and grandkids took the ferry and visited Gulf Shores one day. Dave and I chose to stay, relax, and enjoy the island.
In the blink of an eye, the week is over and we have to return to Kentucky. We all agree this is the best place for a beach vacation.
