How To Plant Flower Containers Easily Using These Brilliant Tips

Although we have been planting flowers in containers for many years, I just discovered how to plant flower containers much more easily.  In this post, you will find two options for planting your pots quickly with less mess.  The plants don’t wilt after transplanting and are much happier.

Last week, Dave and I ventured across the river to W.J. Strassell and Sons, Inc. in Moore’s Hill, Indiana.  My daughter, Danielle, told us about this place and she said the plants are affordable and she is impressed with their meticulous greenhouses.  They offer a complete line of bedding plants and hanging baskets each spring.  If you live close, you need to visit them!

Method 1 – How to ‘Plant’ Large Geraniums

Red geraniums in pots

The true red geraniums quickly caught my eye and Dave’s, too.  We see the red-orange geraniums everywhere.  These gorgeous true red geraniums are beautiful.  They are in hanging baskets, but I snipped off the wire hangers, dug a hole in the dirt in the large pots by the front door, and set the pots down in the dirt.  I can just remove them at the end of summer.

Perhaps you’ve seen this method used before in landscapes.  It’s easy to change out the pots seasonally.  I’ve never tried it though.

Dave argued with me over this.  These hanging baskets dry out faster hanging in the air than they will in these pots nestled in the dirt.  If they do fine hanging, they should do fine nestled in the pots.  Right?

Small Plants for Larger Pots

Calibrachoa

The red geraniums prompted me to look for more red geraniums and I found the MiniFamous Uno Red Calibrachoa, too.  Don’t you love Calibrachoa?  Also known as Million Bells, they are exceptional in pots and also love full sun.  They grow 10 – 15 inches high.

Evolvulus

The Evolvulus we bought is called Beach Bum Blue.  Evolvulus is a member of the morning glory family and is often referred to as dwarf morning glories.

So, I thought the red and blue flowers needed some brightening up with a white flower.  I spotted this Angelonia – Spectacular White, which is a baby summer snapdragon plant.  They love at least six hours of full sun, and these grow 4 – 10 inches high.  We also picked up a white petunia for one of the pots.

Method 2 – Brilliant Tips for How to Plant Flower Containers

So, as I was scrolling through Pinterest pins a while back, a pin from the Garden Lovers Club caught my eye.  So, I visited their site and watched a video on how this is done.

Ian began by filling the container with potting soil.  Then, he set empty plastic pots on top of the soil.  (I only used four pots for this pot, but I could easily have used a fifth.)

He fills in all around the pots with potting soil.  Then, he presses the soil down around the pots, so it leaves a well when the pot is removed.  After removing the plastic pot from the soil, set the flower, pot, and all, into a bucket of water.  Completely submerge the pot and hold it under the water until it is saturated, and no more bubbles come to the surface.  It only takes a minute.

Next, remove the drenched soil and root ball from the plastic pot.  Set it perfectly in the well you made in the soil.   Press the soil around it.  It fits perfectly!

Remove another empty pot and repeat the process.  With this method, it takes no time!

The pot is completely planted in no time.

And there you have it! It is just that easy to plant flower containers!  This year, I used this method for all of my pots, except for those two large red geraniums.
