How To Gift Money – Hide it in a Pop-Top Can!

How To Gift Money - Hide it in a Pop-Top Can!

As I was considering how to wrap money for a birthday gift to give to our little grandson, I came across an interesting idea, how to gift money in a pop-top can!  This boy loves chocolate.  So, combining the chocolate and money is my intention.

You can see the Pinterest pin ◄ here.  In this case, Cindy filled a pop-top can with dollar bills, coins, and candy.  What a great idea!

So, I consulted with my son, Will, and asked what Lane’s favorite canned fruit or vegetable is.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to like canned foods.  When Will questioned me, I explained my idea.  He suggested that I use a baked beans can.  Lane calls them ‘beaners’ and Lane hates them.

I had to laugh and decided to take his suggestion.  Lane has a big personality and is quite the little kidder himself.

Finding the Right Can

At the grocery, Sophie and I looked for a baked beans can with a pop top lid.  We found one.  Unfortunately, the bottom is not like a regular can.  The can opener will not work on this bottom!  There’s not another can of beans with the right bottom!

So, I bought a can of Del Monte fruit that is the same size.  The bottom of the fruit cans will work.  Removing the label and gluing it to this can should be relatively easy.   Obviously, if you choose the right can, you won’t have to buy two!  Lol!

 Safe Cut Can Opener

Before you begin this craft, you will want to have a can opener that leaves a smooth edge on the cans.  You don’t want to have to worry about cutting yourself or someone else on sharp edges.  I ordered this inexpensive one on Amazon.

Directions:

First, you will want to remove the label from the can you can’t use the can opener to open.  If the label on your pop-top can is one that can be opened from the bottom, you won’t have to follow this first step.  Just leave the label intact.

Carefully, lift the edge of the label with the blade of an X-Acto knife.  Completely remove the label.

Then, open the bottom of the second can with the Safe Cut Can Opener.  Empty the contents, wash, and dry the can and the removed bottom.  Remove the label from this can.

If you are using this can, carefully clean the inside and try not to damage the label!

Then, glue the ‘bean’ label onto the can.  Apply a generous amount of Tacky glue onto the underside of the label.  You’ll want to apply it to the end that overlaps.  Be sure to have the label right side up on the can!

Fill the Can with Candy and Money

The Hershey’s nuggets are perfect for this project.  They stand on end easily and three layers fill the can nicely.  They also are heavy enough that it is believable that it’s what it appears to be on the label!  It took 32 nuggets to fill this can.

Place the can, pop-top lid down, on a table and begin a layer of chocolate nuggets.  Then, if you are giving a big bill, roll the cash into a tight roll and tie with a ribbon.  I used a bright red ribbon so it wouldn’t be missed.

You can add a bunch of singles or coins if you prefer.  Position the second layer of chocolates around the rolled money.  Then, add the last layer.

Gluing the Lid in Place

My plan was to use Loctite glue for gluing the lid back in place.  Unfortunately, my glue had dried up completely!  I do think the Loctite glue in the picture will work for this project.

It just so happens we have E-6000 Glue and that ends up being what I used for adhering the bottom back in place.  To use the E-6000, just squeeze a line around the rim of the can and also around the bottom outer edge of the bottom disk.  Allow the glue to set for 2 minutes.  Then, put the disk back in place pressing down firmly.

Next, place another can on top of the glued can for weight.  Let this set overnight.

Your gift can is ready to go now!  You can give it as is or wrap it up in a gift bag.  I created a gift bag for the can and an exploding card in coordinating papers.  You’ll want to come back for how-to make those later.
