How To Make Gift Bags for A Pop-Top Can

Now if you’ve hidden your money and candy in a pop-top can, you’ll probably need to wrap that gift to make it more presentable, and more of a surprise.  Here’s how to make perfectly sized gift bags for presenting pop-top can gifts.  After all, you don’t want them flopping around in a regular gift bag, right?

For this project, you will need some decorative paper, not cardstock.  Since the can is a little heavy with the chocolate nuggets, you don’t want a really lightweight paper either.  A medium weight works best.

Although I use double-sided tape for this, you can use Tacky glue.  But seriously, this tape really is handy to use for this project and makes it quick and easy.  It really makes wrapping presents much easier.

Supplies:

Directions:

The vegetable and fruit cans that I have both measure 2-15/16 – inches in diameter.  That size will fit in this bag neatly.

First, lay the 12 x 12 – inch paper flat on a surface.  Decide which sides you want for the top and bottom.

Then, flip the paper over to the blank side.  Measure 3 – 1/8 – inches from the left edge, making a pencil mark at the top and the bottom.

Fold the left edge inward and crease on the pencil marks, matching up the top and bottom edges.

Measure 5/8 – inch from the edge of the loose side of the folded paper.  Make a pencil mark 5/8 – inch from the edge at the top and the bottom of the loose edge.

Then, fold the right side inward to the top pencil mark, lining up the top edge.  Crease the top corner.

Fold the right edge and crease the fold

Fold the bottom edge inward to the bottom pencil mark, lining up the bottom edges of the paper.  Then, carefully crease the entire edge, being sure to keep the edges lined up.

Applying the Tape

Open the right edge of the folded paper.  Apply the double-sided tape along the top edge of the loose side of the left folded paper.  Leave the protective paper on the tape.

Then, apply double-sided tape along the underside edge of the right side of the paper.  Leave the protective paper on the tape.

Remove the protective paper just a few inches from the top end of the tape.  Bend the protective paper outward so you can pull it easily.

Fold the right side down over the top of the left side.  Be sure to keep everything flat.

Carefully, lift the loose edge and pull the protective paper from one end.  Holding the flap securely, pull the protective paper from the remainder of the tape, smoothing the paper downward as you do.

Folding the Bag

Next, open the sleeve shape.  Match up the creased lines and press to crease an inch at the top of both edges.  Then, repeat on the opposite end.  Next, hold the top and bottom edges on one side and crease all along the edge.  Repeat on the opposite edge.

Create the Bottom of the Bag

Measure 2-7/8 – inches from the bottom and crease

If we’ve done this right, the edges are each 2 – 7/8 – inches.  Lay the bag flat on your work surface.  Measure 2 – 7/8 – inches from the bottom, and mark with a pencil.  Then, fold the bottom upward at the mark.  Flip the sleeve over and fold the bottom upward on the creased line.  (We’re just reinforcing the creased line in both directions.)

Now, open up the sleeve.  On the taped overlapped edge, fold the paper down to the opposite edge.  Hold a corner on the front left edge, fold, and crease from the front edge to the top corner of the back creased edge.  Repeat on the right edge.

Then, fold the back flap down over the front, lining up the front and both edges.  Crease along both flap edges.

Open up the flaps and crease the angled creases in the opposite direction.  The opposite flap will now cover the bottom.

Open the flap and apply the double-sided tape to both diagonal edges.  Apply another row of tape along the edge of the back and front flaps.  Remove all of the protective papers on the tape.

Close the flaps, set the bag on a hard surface, and press down on the inside bottom.  Set the can inside the bag.  If you lay the back on its side, it is easier to put the can inside.

Close the Bag and Add a Ribbon

Bring the front corners together with the back corners.  Fold the top edge down about 3/4 – inch.  Then, fold again.  Crease the folds.  Add a piece of double-sided tape to the back.

Place the center of a ribbon on top of the tape, wrap to the front, and tie a bow.
