Memorial Day is just around the corner and I’m late taking down the bunny display for early spring. I do so love the bunny decor, but I love patriotic decor, too. Our Americana home decor for the mantel will be on display until after the 4th of July.
Beginning the Americana Decor Display
As I began this mantel display, hanging the ‘God Bless America’ plaque was the first item to be positioned on the wall.
Next, I placed the firecracker and paper rosettes display on the right side of the mantel. You can find directions for the paper rosettes ◄ and directions for the paper firecrackers ◄ here.
At this point, I needed something on the left to help balance the composition. A tin Uncle Sam holding an American flag caught my eye and found its place there, but it didn’t seem bulky enough.
I looked around and spotted a red vase and American flags. The flags are not big enough to create a large enough display. I spotted the extra pinwheels from last year and hot-glued three of them to wooden picks. The pinwheels on picks and the flags are just pushed into some dry florist foam. The foam is covered with crinkled brown paper strips from the dollar store.

A small wooden star photo holder finishes the triangular composition.
Creating Another Triangular Composition
On the opposite side of the mantel, another triangular composition takes shape. I’ve added a drummer boy decoration and another star photo holder. I bought these both from Hobby Lobby last year. The star is decorated with the same blue and white star print as the one placed next to Uncle Sam.
I used some Americana cardstock to cut a star and glue it to the backside to create a different look.
Hang a Banner
I spotted the patriotic banner in the picture above at Michael’s last year. I couldn’t resist buying it. This would be easy to recreate with a pad of Americana cardstock and some ribbon.
Add More Americana Items to the Display
Another America plaque is placed in the center of the mantel. Two blue glass vases hold American flags. A red glitter star candle, another ‘Family’ star decoration, two vintage patriotic blocks, and a red glitter Oui jar fill in around the other decorative items.
Standing back and looking at the mantel, I was pretty pleased, but that blank space in the middle was asking for something. My storage bin was empty at this point.
Quick Trip to the Garden Center
I needed a quick trip to the garden center for a few more annuals to fill our pots. Dave and I ran over to Morris Lawn and Landscape, a lawn care and landscaping company located in Rising Sun, IN right off of 56. They have a garden center and gift shop.
Check out the vintage gas pump clock they had in the gift shop! It seems like the perfect addition to the display!
On the way home, we stopped at Dollar Tree and I found a little red truck garden stake. I picked up a wooden block, too.
With a ruler and mechanical pencil, I found the center of the block. Then, I drilled a small hole in the center. Next, I marked where to cut and asked Dave to cut the wire stake. My cutters are not heavy-duty enough to cut this wire.
Placed next to the clock, it’s the finishing touch.
