How to Make a DIY Spider-Man Gift Box

Spider-Man Gift Wrap Idea

A Spider-Man birthday gift wrap idea caught my eye on Pinterest.  I thought it was really clever.  With our grandson’s birthday coming up and knowing he loves Spider-Man, it seemed the perfect way to wrap and decorate his gift.

I ordered a National Geographic Metal Detector from Amazon.  Our grandson, Lane, is a very bright 9-year-old and was totally excited when he opened his present.  He seemed to enjoy the Spider-Man wrap and the challenge of removing the spider web!

I thought that the royal blue gift wrap we had would be a perfect background for a white string spider web.  Well, the gift wrap was about 3/4 of an inch too short to wrap around the gift.  Of course.

By tilting the package slightly at an angle, the ends overlapped, and it fit perfectly.  Double-sided tape works perfectly for closing the ends.

Fold the ends as usual.

Spider-Man Graphic

We bought a Marvel sticker book for little Ripley.  Unfortunately, the stickers are too small for this project.  I scanned the Spider-Man sticker and enlarged it.  I printed it to ensure it would fit better on the gift box.

Depending on your package size, you may find stickers, cut-out pictures, coloring book pages, or even create your own version.  Wait to glue the Spider-Man onto the gift until the spider web is in place.

Package wrapped, Spider-Man graphic ready, now onto the spider web.  For this project, white butcher twine works perfectly.

Next, wrap the twine around the box vertically and horizontally.  The top should look like the first picture below.  The loose ends should be tied together on the back.  The image below on the right shows how the bottom should look when all the strings are in place and tied together.

Create the Spider Web

In the middle of gluing the spider web, I remembered that I had Aleene’s Fabric Stiffener.  Going downstairs to the storage room where I have kept the bottle for years, I realize it’s not there.  On one of my reorganizing missions, I clearly decided there’s a better place to store it.  Dang.  Where did I put that?

Anyway, if you have some fabric stiffener, you might want to try it.  Otherwise, Tacky Glue does work fine.

First, draw around your box and plan your composition on a piece of paper.   Then, a plastic produce or shopping bag cut to size makes a perfect base for the glued twine.

Run a line of glue onto the plastic following one spiral section of the larger web spiral.  Then, lay the end of the string on top of the glue.  Pinch the ends where the radial lines intersect to create a ‘V’.  Continue gluing around the spiral in the same way.  Cut the twine end and glue it to the end where you started.

Adhere Spider-Man and the Web

Carefully, peel the glued shapes from the plastic.  Then, lay the large shape on the twine wrapping the box.  Glue the string V points to the wrapped twine.

Next, glue the smaller shape to the twine in the same way.  Then attach the end of the twine roll to Spider-Man’s wrist with Tacky Glue.  Line up Spider-Man’s hand with the twine and the spider web.  Glue the twine to the spider web where the two intersect.

Next, glue the twine down the side of the box.  Allow that to dry.

Glue the twine to the edge of the package to hold it in place.

Then, wrap the end of the twine around the back and tie it to the other strings.  Lay the twine diagonally so that it intersects both of the remaining points.  Glue the twine to the sides of the box, cut, and tie the ends to the other strings on the back.
