Stabilizing The Arms and Ears
In order to stabilize the Papier Mâché Bunny’s arms so they aren’t moving around, pack a generous amount of the clay under the upper arm and around it, as shown in the picture. Allow this to dry some while you work on another part of the bunny.
Start adding clay to the outside of each of the ears. You can add more clay to these areas after the first layer dries. It’s not imperative that you cover everything the first time but the bunny needs to be completely covered in the papier mâché clay and then, details can be added.
After the clay under the arm has dried and the arm is more stable, begin adding clay to the arm or arms and create paws.
This is better done in layers.
Adding a big glob all at once will invariably cause the clay to droop. It takes patience but applying a layer, allowing it to dry, or almost dry, and then applying another layer will give better results.
I work on different areas of the bunny and continue working until it becomes difficult to do anymore without damaging what has just been done. Then, just step away.
Begin to Add Detail
You can see how the first layer of clay on the foot looks not so good, right? But, when the second layer is added and the toe detail, it really begins to look like a rabbit foot. You can also see in the picture that the leg was beginning to take shape. Look at a picture or a decorative bunny you already have to see how the rabbit’s leg bends to get an idea of how to create your own.
If you look closely, you can see how the leg has been built up with clay to mimic the upper and lower parts of the leg.
Roll two little balls and place them on the bunny’s head for eyes. I moved them a couple of times before I finally decided on placement. You’ll want to use your finger to blend the eyeballs into the surrounding clay.
Allow The Bunny To Dry
Allow the bunny to dry overnight or for a couple of days, then, add more details. You can see in the picture that there was an attempt to create a little ridge along the front edges of the ears. The thought was that there would then be a line of demarcation from the inside of the ear to the furry part.
When the clay dries, it shrinks some and some of the details will invariably be less apparent. In the picture, you can see areas where another layer of clay was added. Just smooth out the edges with your finger. One of his upper arms is larger than the other. The smaller one will have to be built up more after the added clay has dried. I admit, he looks a little creepy right now!
Add A Tail
Don’t forget to add a tail! Form a ball-shape with the clay and place in the appropriate position. Then press the edges down and smooth into the surrounding dried clay. You will probably have to add additional clay to his tail to shape it better, too.
The soles of the rabbit’s feet will also require a good layer of clay. Lay the rabbit on his back or side so the clay on the soles of his feet can dry. Once all the details and the soles of the feet have dried, and you are satisfied with your bunny, the next step is painting.
