How To Make Beautiful Blue And White Chinoiserie Christmas Ornaments

You won’t believe how easy it is to make this beautiful blue and white chinoiserie Christmas ornaments!  There is just something so appealing about blue and white Asian-inspired ceramics isn’t there?

The last couple of years, I’ve decorated a 4-foot white twig tree to display in the foyer. Using only white, silver, and gold ornaments, it is quite stunning.

This year, I plan to decorate the white twig tree in blue and white.

The ornaments that I am using are 2.64″ in diameter.  I found these at Hobby Lobby.  Remember when you are buying the ornaments that you will want a smooth surface.  These are shiny white glass, and they work perfectly.  The white background of the napkin is barely visible once it has been glued to the ornament.

I also found that any Mod Podge left around the napkin, is easy to remove with a paper towel or your finger.

Chinoiserie Christmas Ornaments Directions:

Here are two different options for making the chinoiserie Christmas ornaments.

#1 Cut Elements

The first thing you need to do is cut the elements you want to use from the napkins.

Cut out the separate elements

Begin gluing one of the larger elements to the ornament.  Dab a bit of glue on the ornament.  I start gluing from the center of the design.  Then, brush glue onto the ornament under the napkin outward, a section at a time.

Then, decide how you want to place the other large elements.  I use 3 or 4 large elements on these ornaments.  Once you decide where you want them, begin gluing them just like the first.  Use your paintbrush handle to roll down any of the tissue that is raised.

Spray a Clear Protectant

After you have all the elements glued to the ornament, spray a coat of the Clear Topcoat over the surface.  You can see in the picture above that I just use a cardboard box to create a little spraying booth.  It’s simple to use a screwdriver to punch a couple of holes in the box and then, insert a dowel.  The Christmas hooks are still stored in the bins.  A couple of pipe cleaners make a make-shift hanger.  Spray one side, then, turn the ornament around and spray the other side.

#2 Allover Pattern Ornament

This napkin is round.  It’s a little trickier to use than a square or rectangular napkin would be.  I cut the napkin in half and use one-half.  Just brush a little glue halfway between the top and the center of the bottom.

Turn the ornament over and begin making cuts from the bottom side of the ornament.  You’ll want to cut away some of the napkin along the edges of the cuts you make.   I try to have very little overlap.  You don’t want too much bulk in one spot.

You can see that I left the slices of napkin loose on the end.  Then, I went back and cut the excess napkin before completely gluing the sections.

Cut one side of the napkin from top to bottom.  Paint a strip of Mod Podge and lay the napkin strip on top of the glue and rub gently into place with your finger.

Then, lay the remaining side of the napkin over top.  Cut the loose napkin to meet with the first edge.  Then, glue the napkin edge to meet the napkin edge you previously glued.  See the picture above with the red arrows.

Use the round handle of your paintbrush to roll over the napkin tissue to flatten any raised areas.

Continue cutting and gluing until you’ve covered the outside of the ornament.

Gluing The Neck and Replacing the Ornament Cap

You will want to glue the strips 3/4 of the way up the neck of the opening.   Because the napkin I used was round, there was about a 1/4 x 1/2-inch piece I needed to add by the neck of the ornament.  This pattern is so busy, it is not even noticeable!

I had to pry the metal tabs of the ornament cap out slightly for it to slip over the added bulk of the napkin.

For these ornaments that are completely covered with the napkin, brush a coat of the Mod Podge over the surface for protection.

Aren’t these pretty?  I love them and there are a few more to finish…  Be sure to sign up below so you won’t miss the twig tree in blue and white.
