A couple of weeks ago, you may remember that I painted some Mandala Easter eggs. While I was painting those, the thought of painting Mandala designs on Oui French Yogurt Jars crossed my mind. Upcycling with these little jars is so much fun! They are great for holding your Mandala tools and keeping them easily accessible, too!

If you are not familiar with and don’t know what mandala is, it is a complex abstract design that is usually circular in form and you have surely seen them many times. You can find a multitude of different designs on Pinterest and I pinned a ton of them!

After a little research, I stumbled upon a set of tools for mandala painting. This set consists of 53 pieces, including a bag, stencils, paintbrushes, dotting tools, and stainless steel ball styluses.
- Mandala tools
- Clean and Empty Oui Yogurt Jars
- Rust-Oleum Paint & Primer in your choice of colors
- A variety of acrylic craft paints
- Spray Sealer
- water and paper towels
- cardboard box or piece of cardboard
Basecoat for the French Yogurt Jars
Be sure the jar is clean. You can use Goo Gone to clean any glue off the sides, wash with dish soap, and then dry thoroughly.
First, you will want to place a cardboard box or cardboard on the ground outside to protect your grass. Then, place your glass yogurt jar upside down on the cardboard. I like using cardboard because the glass is supported better on the cardboard versus newspaper or plastic.
So, I was having difficulty spraying the paint around the base. Brainstorming, I came up with the idea of placing the jar upside down on a wine bottle and it made it much easier.
Apply several light coats onto the outside of the jar. By spraying from a downward angle, you won’t have to worry about spraying the inside of the jar. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
I used Rust-Oleum Paint & Primer in Gloss Crimson Red and Gloss Black. We already had these from earlier projects, but if I were buying the paint, I probably would buy the satin finish instead. The gloss, satin, or flat will work fine.
Painting The Mandala On The French Yogurt Jars
Just under the rim of the yogurt jar, is a slightly raised ridge. It makes a good line to follow for your first row of dots. I quit trying to be so technical and just eyeballed these dots. Fortunately, on this little jar, they met together perfectly.

Unlike the eggs that I base-coated with acrylic craft paint, using spray paint is less forgiving. You can’t touch up the basecoat so easily with spray paint! Once again, my mandala is not perfect, but I think it still looks pretty anyway! Maybe it looks better than the mandala on the eggs but realize there is still room for improvement.
One thing that is quickly apparent is that you need to make large, medium, and small dots. The design just looks better with a variety of sizes.

When you are finished with painting the mandala design and the paint has dried, you will want to use a spray sealer to protect your work. Remember to use several light coats instead of a heavy coat to avoid drippage!
Don’t these little decorative jars have a Bohemian feel? I’m thinking another beach-inspired yogurt jar would be pretty using the Seaglass spray paint and white craft paint… The colors and patterns are limitless!
