How to Make a Paper Napkin Transfer Wine Glass Shade

While browsing Pinterest, I came across a wine glass shade made from a paper cup. Although it’s a cute idea, it seems to have some limitations. That’s when I thought about using cardstock and paper napkin transfer to bring more versatility to this concept.

Then, I began to see a multitude of little wine glass shades made from cardstock and vellum.  Although this project is for Halloween, you can imagine that the wine glass shades can be customized to match any occasion or theme.  In no time, you can have multiple unique wine glass shades to add to your tablescape!

Download and Print the PDF

First, download the free PDF and print the template onto cardstock.  Use it as a stencil or apply the napkin onto the printed cardstock, which is what I did here.  You might want to try the template on your wine glass to see if it needs to be adjusted for the wine glass size and shape.  Lengthen or shorten the template, if necessary, to fit your wine glass.

The wine glass I used for this project was purchased at Dollar Tree.  It has a 3-inch diameter opening and stands 7.25 inches tall.

When printing the template, do not use the ‘fit to page’ setting.  It will alter the template size.

Preparing the Napkin

Paper napkins typically have two white layers underneath the patterned outer layer.  You need to remove these layers.  Sometimes the layers are easy to remove.  This napkin has a raised embossed pattern that is holding pretty securely.

Place a small piece of tape on the back layer, then pull it up to easily remove the entire layer.  Repeat for the second layer.

Paper Napkin Transfer Using Plastic Wrap Method

You'll need parchment paper, Glad Plastic Wrap, napkin of your choice, and cardstock.  You will also need an ironing board, an iron, and scissors.
* I know that Glad Plastic Wrap will work. Others have tried a different plastic wrap with no luck.

First, lay a large piece of parchment paper out to protect your ironing board or wool felt mat.   (I cut two pieces about eighteen inches long.)  It must be large enough for plenty of room on all sides of your cardstock.

Place the cardstock on top of the parchment paper on the mat or ironing board.

Cut a piece of regular plastic Glad Wrap larger than your cardstock.  Be sure it extends past all of the edges of your cardstock.  The plastic wrap acts as the glue to adhere the napkin to the cardboard.

Ironing

Set your iron to medium heat. If needed, increase the temperature slightly to melt the plastic.

Place another piece of parchment paper over the top of the layered cardstock and napkin completely covering the cardstock, the plastic wrap, and the napkin.

Gently press the iron, which should be set on medium heat, over the parchment, being sure to press the entire paper napkin.  Then, press an area, slide the iron slightly, and repeat until the entire napkin surface has been heat-pressed.

You can see the printed lampshade on the cardstock through the napkin.  This really helped in the placement of the napkin.  I avoided the black border.

Be sure the plastic is completely covered and does not come in contact with the hot iron or it will stick to your iron!

Cut Out the Lampshade, Glue, and Assemble

Cut the lampshade with a sharp pair of scissors.  Feel free to use decorative scissors to cut the curved edge as I have or just use a straight cut with your scissors.

Use adhesive to glue one overlapped shade’s end to the other, overlapping the edge 1/4 inch.

Place a battery-operated tealight in the wine glass and place the shade on the glass.  If you use a tealight candle, do not leave the burning candle unattended!

Can you imagine a table set with several of these little wine glass shade lights?  It’s amazing that it’s so easy to make and so adorable!
