This rag Christmas tree in a Oui yogurt jar craft was inspired by an AI-generated pin. It was apparent that it was AI. The holes in the buttons were wonky and not uniform. There were several odd wine cork sizes. Some were miniature.
You can see the inspiration pin◄ here. Recreating that tree would be very difficult. However, using wine corks and a skewer seemed like a good idea. Here’s my version of the Christmas tree.
Christmas Tree in a Oui Yogurt Jar

Supplies Needed:
- Clean Oui Yogurt Jars
- Chalk Paint
- Tacky Glue
- Flat Paintbrush
- Florist Foam
- 12-inch Bamboo skewer
- Wine corks
- Christmas fabrics
- Buttons
- Scissors
Directions:
Decorate the Oui Yogurt Jar
First, paint the outside of the jar with the chalk paint. I’ve used Folk Art Chalk Paint in Oatmeal as a base. Paint two or three coats of paint over the jar, and just the top rim. Then, allow the paint to dry between coats.
You’ll want to use a soft-bristle brush and paint gently. If you are too aggressive, you’ll scrape off the paint. Don’t freak out if you do. Allow the paint to dry, and then paint over it.
Add the Sheet Music
Fortunately, I started taking piano lessons in the second grade and continued through high school. We still have a piano in our home. As you can imagine, we have amassed quite a collection of piano music books over the years. If you don’t have a collection, you can download Christmas sheet music ◄ here.
For this project, I printed O Christmas Tree on tissue paper. First, scan the music page and download. I uploaded it and used Canva to change the background color to Light Orange (#fce8d2).
Then, I printed it onto tissue paper. If you’ve never printed on tissue paper, click here ► for 3 different ways to print on tissue paper.
Next, I tore out the first line of the tissue sheet music, leaving an uneven raw edge around all sides.
Use matte Mod Podge to attach the tissue sheet music to the Oui jar. If you have a few wrinkles, lay a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the Mod Podged paper. Then, smooth the Mod Podged paper onto the glass jar. Allow the Mod Podge to dry. Then, apply another top coat of the Mod Podge.
Add Floral Foam to the Oui Jar
Dollar Tree has a package of floral foam that works perfectly for this project. I turned the jar upside down and pressed it slightly into the foam. Then I cut through the foam to create a cylinder of foam that fit into the jar.
Before pushing the foam into the Oui jar, apply glue to the bottom inside of the jar.
Make the Christmas Tree
The initial plan for this project included a 1/4 inch wooden dowel. After working with it a bit, I realized a bamboo skewer would work better. It is much easier to drill through the wine corks and insert the skewers in them.
First, drill a hole down the center of a wine cork and through the center side to side of two additional corks. Then, cut the skewer to size. I cut off 4 inches from the end.
Run the pointed end of the skewer through the center of the first wine cork. Then, run the skewer through the remaining two, side to side.
Tear the Fabric Strips
Cut a short slit into the selvage edge of a piece of fabric, and tear it across the width of the fabric. Tear several pieces of fabric in this way. I’ve used two different patterns. You can make these as narrow as you want. The strips cut for these trees are about 1, 5/8, and 3/8 inches wide. Then, I tore each of those into 6-, 5-, and 4-inch lengths.
I tied a couple of fabric strips between each of the corks. Before you insert the bamboo skewer into the foam, run a generous line of glue along the edge of the foam and the inside of the jar.
Tie more fabric strips between the corks. Then, tie an overhand knot in the center of several fabric strips. You’ll want to tear those strips a little shorter as you add them up the tree.
When you reach the skewer at the top of the cork, begin folding the fabric strips in half and flare the ends out slightly. Then, glue the strip to the skewer. I added 3 of these to a layer, then moved up the skewer and added another layer until I reached the cut end.
Add Buttons to the Christmas Tree
To add interest to the buttons, thread embroidery floss through the holes. You can use a needle for this, but it’s easy to squeeze glue onto one end. Then, twirl it with your thumb and forefinger. Let the glue stiffen and dry. It only takes a minute with Tacky Glue. Thread the glued end through the button holes and tie a double knot on the back side.
Glue multiple buttons onto the fabric strips around the tree.
Finish with a Twine Wrap
Lastly, wrap a piece of jute twine below the rim and tie a little bow. How cute is this?
This was my post I was working on in July. Christmas in July, right? Well, we went on vacation. I took this project with me. It sat in the corner all week. There’s no point in waiting until December.
