This adorable heart valentine banner could not be much simpler, could it? Today’s festive paper cardstock pads are loaded with beautiful paper designs. You can make this banner as short or as long as you want!

- Fiskars X-Large Heart Squeeze Punch
- 1/8 – inch hole punch
- large eye blunt needle
The red and white string just seems to be perfect for this project, although I had originally planned to use a 1/8-inch satin ribbon.
You can use a pad of Valentine’s cardstock like the one above or a package of floral and patterned cardstock of your choosing to match your decor. I didn’t use ‘Valentine’ papers.
For this project, I used the Fiskars X-Large Heart Squeeze Punch, but if you have a Cricut, you can make hearts with it.
The hearts this punch makes are about 2 inches across. A 1/4-inch hole punch is too large for this size. It will look disproportionate. The 1/8-inch is the perfect sizing.
The blunt needle makes this project extremely easy. Although you can thread the end of the string without it, why would you make things more difficult?
Valentine Banner Directions
First, decide how long you want your banner. Take the string to your mantel or window and, leaving tails at both ends, drape the string and cut.
If you’re not sure how long you want the banner, you can just start adding the hearts to the string. You’ll have to move them along the string, but they slide easily on the string.
Punch The Holes In The Hearts
You want the holes at the top of the hearts to be equidistant on each side. So, decide where you want the first hole punched and punch it. Then, pick up another heart, line them up, and punch, using the first hole as your guide. Next, flip one of the hearts and use the hole as a guide to punch the second hole in the heart.
Now, you can use the heart with two holes as a template for punching the rest of the holes. If the pattern on the template makes it difficult to see the holes, flip the heart over to the white side.
Display The Valentine Banner On Your Mantel
It is easy to slide the hearts along the string to accommodate hooks or nails.
To drape one or two valentine banners on your mantel as I did, you might want to use one of these small-sized clear Command strips. You probably don’t want to hammer nails into your mantel, right?
So, drape the heart banners across the mantel. Initially, the plan was to drape each of the simple heart banners over a command hook on either side of the decorative arch. I didn’t like it. It just seemed too busy. In the end, the asymmetrical look won.
Typically, I decorate the mantel before the banners, but this time is an exception. You’ll want to come back and see our Valentine’s mantel display! The final result is really pretty!
