How To Make A Beautiful Vintage Car Christmas Wreath

Everyone has seen the vintage red trucks trending in all the stores, magazines, Pinterest, and everywhere for the last few years.  Have you seen the red vintage cars at Hobby Lobby?  It’s the key piece for creating a beautiful vintage car Christmas wreath!

As I stroll through the store, I decide to look for a red vintage truck to add to a Christmas wreath.  Then, I spot this Red Vintage Race Car Metal Wall Decor.  I love this!  The vintage car won out over the vintage truck.

Red and Black Check – Wired Ribbon

Then, I find this red and black check-wired edge ribbon at Amazon.   Doesn’t it look perfect with the vintage car?  I bought two of these rolls of ribbon.  One roll has plenty for this bow.

You will need a 24-inch plain artificial pine Christmas wreath, too.

Supplies Needed for a Vintage Car Christmas Wreath

Directions for the Christmas Wreath

Apply The Artificial Snow

First, you need to spray the artificial wreath with artificial snow.  The white flocking on the wreath will contrast nicely and set off the red car and bows.  Follow the directions on the can and spray as much as you like.

Apply Snow Spray to the Wreath.

Be aware that some might flake off.  In some of the pictures, you can see some rubbed off on the ribbon.  It can easily be brushed off of the ribbon.  You can be generous.

Make The Ribbon Bow

Next, make a big bow from the red and black buffalo check ribbon.

Decide how large or small you want the loops of the bow by holding a couple of loops up to the wreath.

Then, hold the ribbon in one hand and loop the ribbon back and forth, holding in the center.  Be sure to twist the ribbon at the center to show the right side of each loop. (If your ribbon doesn’t have a front and backside, you don’t need to worry.  You can see the difference in the front and back of this ribbon in the first picture.)

Make an even number of loops.  I usually make 8 loops.  These can all be the same size or of varying lengths.

Next, take a length of florist wire, long enough to weave through the wreath to the back with enough excess to twist to secure.  You can cut off any excess.  So, be generous!

Wrap the wire around the center and twist together to secure.

The Ribbon Bow Tails

Then, cut a length of ribbon long enough for two tails.  Be generous.  You can always cut off the excess.  From the center of the ribbon, wrap the ribbon around the center of the bow.  Make an overhand knot.  Then, be sure the wire ends are to the left and right of the knot.

One by one, pull the loops up with your finger inside the loop.  (Don’t smash or crease the loops!)  Twist the loop at the base, tweak, and position where you want each.

Attach Florist Wire to the Vintage Car

Attach florist wire to hangers on the back of the car.

Cut 2 lengths of wires about 15-inches long.  Thread each of the wires halfway through one of the sawtooth picture hangers.  Twist the wire to secure it to the hanger.  Thread the wires through the wreath to the backside and through the wire base.

Pull the wires taut and twist around the wire wreath base on the backside to secure each side of the car to the wreath.  Once you secure one side, check to make sure the car is straight before twisting the wires together.

I actually wire the car to the wreath as it hung on this wreath hanger.  I love it already!

Then, wire the red and black buffalo check ribbon bow to the wreath.

A Few More Items for the Christmas Wreath

At this point, my granddaughter, Sophie, and I made another trip to the craft store.  Perusing the aisles of Christmas ornaments, she spots this Merry Christmas ornament, and it seems perfect for the wreath.

We went through the berry picks.  Some were a lot more ornate and fussier.  We decide the simple berries with leaves is perfect.

There is no need for the ribbon on the ornament.  Just remove it.  Then, cut another piece of florist wire and thread through the hole in the ornament.   Next, twist the wire to secure and attach to the wreath.  In order for the ornament to lay nicely, you may have to flatten and move some of the greenery.

Quick Tip

Anytime you buy silk flowers or picks, the leaves and flowers need to be fluffed and tweaked to look more natural.  Aside from being smashed and compacted, they usually look stiff and unnatural.  Just pull the leaves out and use the wire down the middle of the wreath to reshape.

Then, add the berry picks to the wreath and it’s quickly done!  Don’t you love it?
