How to Make a Unique DIY Favor Box
Posted on
You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make this DIY favor box, and it is so cute! There is no limit to the variety of patterns available with decorative cardstock. Just imagine creating a personal treat box in vibrant florals, subtle pastels, bold geometric designs, or playful designs for children.
You can mix and match patterns as I’ve done here, or keep it simple with a single standout design. One advantage of this box is that you can make it well in advance, open it up, and lay it flat for storage.

Cardstock and Scoring Board with scoring tool8.5 x 11 inch Decorative Cardstock
Download the template above, or follow the measurements to score and crease your cardstock.
First, lay the cardstock lengthwise on the scoring board. Score at 2 inches and 6.5 inches. Then, turn the cardstock sideways on the scoring board. Score at 4.5 inches and 6.5 inches.
Score at 2 inches and 6.5 inches
Turn the paper sideways and score the straight lines.
Next, score the top center square in half. This scoring line should be at 5-1/2 inches. Then repeat on the bottom-center square.
Score the top middle and bottom squares in half.
Measure from the side of the scoring board to the diagonal line.
Then, score the diagonal lines. It’s a little difficult to eyeball it and get the score correctly. Lay the cardstock on the scoring board and measure from the diagonal line on the outer edge at the top and the bottom inner corner of the diagonal line. Make sure each end of the line is equidistant from the edge. Then, the score will be straight.
Make the Folds
Lay the cardstock lengthwise on a hard surface. Fold the edges inward and crease lengthwise on scored lines.
Fold inward and crease lengthwise on scored lines.
Turn the paper widthwise, and fold the right side inward on the scored line. Open the cardstock and fold the left side inward on the other scored line.
Turn the cardstock and fold the right side inward on the scored line.
Fold the left side inward on the scored line.
Lay a metal ruler along the diagonal lines and lift the cardstock upward against the ruler’s edge from the back. Run your finger along the cardstock, pressing against the edge of the ruler to crease the cardstock.

Crease the middle squares on the scored lines.
Score and crease the center top of both 2-inch squares on each side. You only need to crease the top half of the score so that it goes to the inside of the box.
Glue the Favor Box
Apply Tacky Glue to the trapezoids on both ends of one long edge. Fold the side flap over onto the center section, press on the glued area, and hold until the glue sets. ( It doesn’t take long for Tacky Glue to take hold.)
Apply glue to the trapezoids on both ends of one long side.
Fold the side over and press the glued areas until the glue sets.
Next, apply glue to the trapezoids on the remaining outside flap. Then, press down in place until the glue sets.
Apply glue to the trapezoids on the opposite edge.
Glue the right side in place.
Pull up the ends and bring them together to make sure the box is working right. Be sure the side creases fold inward.
Pull up the ends to open the box.
The box edge center folds should bend inward.
Then, use a hole punch to create two holes at the center top of both the front and back. Fill with your choice of candy or treats.
Punch two holes in the front and back tops for a ribbon.
Fill the box with treats.
Thread a ribbon through the holes and tie a bow in the front to hold the top closed.
