Sharing wooden heart craft ideas was on my agenda for last week. Wooden heart crafts are so simple! Well, my mojo was low last week. Maybe it was the lack of sunshine and the dreary days of winter. The week came and went.
Then, I saw an idea I had to try. Suzana on Instagram inspired this post.

Supplies:
- 10″ x 10″ Wooden heart
- 90 lb. 185 g Watercolor paper
- Paper cutter
- Multi Medium Matte or Mod Podge
- White Multi-Surface Craft Paint
- X-Acto knife
- Tim Holtz Distress Ink pad
- Dew Drop Memento Rich Cocoa
- Folk Art Antiquing Medium
- Silk flowers
Directions:
If your wooden heart does not have a hole at the top, and you want one, now is the time to drill one.
Covering the Surface with Watercolor Paper
First, cut a page of watercolor paper into strips. I cut strips 1-1/8 inches, 1 inch, and 3/4 inch wide. Then, I cut the strips into squares and rectangles. Each side needed almost a whole page.
I used Multi Medium Matte to adhere the paper pieces to the wooden heart. Notice that the paper pieces are glued at a slight angle. You can see in the pictures below how to begin gluing the squares and rectangles. Overlap the pieces and leave some of the wooden heart showing.
Continue gluing the pieces until the surface of the heart is covered.
Next, use an X-Acto knife to remove the excess paper from the heart.
Repeat this cutting, gluing, and trimming process on the backside of the wooden heart.
Base Coat Painting
Next, use a flat paintbrush to apply a coat of white or ivory multi-surface craft paint to the front, back, and sides of the heart. For a completely different look, paint any color you want.
Apply two coats of multi-surface paint to the heart. Paint the first time with the heart point facing you. Then, turn the heart so the point faces away from you so that you’re sure to cover all edges of the paper pieces.
Antiquing the Wooden Heart
After the entire heart is painted, you’ll want to antique the paint-covered surface. For this, I’ve used Folk Art Antiquing Medium – 812.
The Instagram post I saw featured a gel antiquing medium that I have never encountered before and do not own. This inexpensive Folk Art Antiquing Medium worked better than I expected.
Use Tim Holtz Distress Ink pad to distress the outer edges. This pad is Walnut Stain. Then, I used Dew Drop Memento Rich Cocoa on the very outer edges.
Decorate the Wooden Heart
Here’s where you can be creative and make this craft your own. I gathered laces and ribbons and laid the trims on the heart. At first, I planned to use pink picot ribbon and lace with pink flowers.
Ultimately, I chose the wider lace trim with the half-inch burgundy ribbon, which seemed to have a rich look. I wove the burgundy ribbon through the openings in the lace and then, went to look for some silk flowers to match.
The small roses I found in my stash were perfect, but their color was muted. So, a little bit of Alizarin Crimson craft paint on all of the petals livened them up. Did you know you can actually paint silk flowers to change the colors?
Next, add a satin bow, an old button, and the roses with some rose leaves. Then, you’ll need a little jute twine threaded and the ends tied into a knot for a hanger.
So, what do you think? Isn’t this an interesting technique?
